Company Description:

5Blue is a Canadian engineering and fabrication company specializing in modular gas processing systems for the energy industry. Based in Nisku, Alberta, our engineers, welders, fabricators, and support professionals work together to deliver custom systems designed to perform in some of the world’s most demanding operating environments. Our success is built on practical problem-solving, skilled craftsmanship, and a team of people who take pride in what they do.

Role Description:

The Journeyman Pipefitter is a certified trades professional responsible for the skilled fabrication, installation, and maintenance of piping systems on 5Blue Process Equipment Inc.’s custom processing equipment, pressure skids, and field installations. This role requires a fully certified, experienced pipefitter who works with a high degree of independence, applies sound trade judgment, and consistently delivers work that meets 5Blue’s quality, safety, and code compliance standards.

The Journeyman Pipefitter is a core member of 5Blue’s fabrication and field operations team and plays a direct role in the quality and efficiency of every processing equipment package that leaves the shop or is installed at a customer site. At the Journeyman level, the expectation is full ownership of assigned scopes, accurate self-inspection of work, and active contribution to the team’s safety culture and productivity.

Key Accountabilities:

Pipefitting & Fabrication

  • Perform the full scope of journeyman-level pipefitting work including layout, measurement, cutting, bevelling, threading, fit-up, and assembly of carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome-moly, and alloy piping systems.
  • Fabricate and assemble pipe spools, headers, manifolds, and process piping packages from isometric drawings, P&IDs, and engineering specifications.
  • Install flanged, threaded, socket weld, and butt weld piping connections in accordance with applicable codes and approved procedures.
  • Install valves, instruments, pipe supports, hangers, expansion loops, and associated piping components accurately and to drawing.
  • Perform small bore tubing installations including instrument tubing, impulse lines, and chemical injection lines.
  • Support tack welding, fit-up alignment, and weld joint preparation in coordination with the welding team.

Quality & Code Compliance

  • Ensure all pipefitting work is performed in full compliance with ASME B31.3, CSA B51, and other applicable piping codes and project specifications.
  • Self-inspect completed work thoroughly before submission for formal quality review or NDE, ensuring dimensional accuracy, correct material identification, and drawing compliance.
  • Complete weld traceability records, spool identification tags, and as-built mark-ups accurately and on time.
  • Participate in hydrostatic testing, pneumatic testing, and NDE activities, supporting test preparation, execution, and post-test restoration.
  • Identify and communicate non-conformances, material discrepancies, and drawing conflicts to the General Foreman or Engineer promptly.

Field Installation & Commissioning Support

  • Perform field piping installations at customer sites and processing facilities throughout Alberta, including tie-ins, modifications, and new installations on operating or pre-commissioning equipment.
  • Support equipment commissioning activities including final piping connections, leak checks, and system flushing and cleaning procedures.
  • Work safely in operating plant environments, following site-specific permit-to-work systems, isolation procedures, and confined space entry requirements.
  • Liaise professionally with client site personnel and supervisors, representing 5Blue’s standards of workmanship and conduct.

Apprentice Supervision & Mentorship

  • Provide direct on-the-job supervision and mentorship to apprentice pipefitters assigned to work under their direction.
  • Assign tasks appropriate to the apprentice’s current year and competency level, providing clear instruction and constructive feedback.
  • Sign off on apprentice logbook hours and competencies in accordance with Alberta AIT requirements.
  • Model safe work practices, professionalism, and high-quality workmanship for apprentices at all times.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Adhere to all Alberta OHS regulations, 5Blue’s HSE policies, and site-specific safety requirements at all times.
  • Conduct pre-task hazard assessments and participate actively in toolbox talks and safety meetings.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in the shop and on site, identifying and correcting hazards proactively.
  • Report all incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions to the General Foreman immediately.
  • Ensure all work within their scope is performed within established permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, and isolation requirements.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Valid Alberta Journeyman Pipefitter Certificate; Red Seal (Interprovincial Standards) endorsement is a strong asset.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of post-certification journeyman pipefitting experience in a fabrication shop, oilfield services, or industrial construction environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading and working from piping isometrics, P&IDs, and fabrication drawings.
  • Experience with carbon steel piping fabrication and field installation; stainless steel and alloy experience is an asset.
  • Valid H2S Alive, Standard First Aid, and WHMIS certifications.
  • Valid Alberta driver’s license with a clean abstract.

Preferred

  • Experience fabricating and installing piping on custom processing equipment, pressure vessels, or oilfield skid packages.
  • Familiarity with ASME B31.3 and CSA B51 piping code requirements in a fabrication context.
  • Experience with small bore tubing, instrument connections, and chemical injection systems.
  • CSTS-09 or equivalent oilfield safety training.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring apprentice pipefitters.

Working Conditions:

This role involves regular work in the fabrication shop and at field locations throughout Alberta, including remote and rural sites. Shop conditions include exposure to heat, noise, dust, and welding fumes. Field assignments may involve multi-day rotations, variable weather conditions, and work on operating plant sites. Full PPE required at all times. Extended hours or overtime may be required during peak production or commissioning periods.
