Position Summary
This unionized position is a 12-month, continuing position based out of our Information Technology Centre. Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. This position is eligible to participate in the Extended Health & Dental Plan, as well as pension contributions to the Municipal Pension Plan.
Under the direction of the Manager - Information Technology or designate, the IT Field Technologist is responsible for the provision of end-user computer software and hardware support to all schools and district staff. The incumbent will be an active member of the Information Technology team and will be responsible for hardware and software troubleshooting for resolution, tracking of all calls received for follow-up reporting and may deliver basic training sessions.
The work involves the performance of a variety of technical tasks under limited supervision and in accordance with clearly established policies and procedures. Sound judgment is required in handling new assignments and determining new work methods with new and/or unusual problems referred to the Manager - Information Technology or designate. Work is periodically reviewed for quality of service provided and adherence to established standards of performance.
Specific Accountabilities
Supporting and assisting, on-site or remotely, with routine maintenance of District servers, networks and operating systems, cloud services, including, but not limited to the following duties:
- Ensuring functionality including password management, user management, backup administration and documentation of set-ups, changes and updates;
- Responsible for strategies and performing script development, image deployment, maintenance and updating;
- Responsible for troubleshooting hardware, software, back-up and restoration problems;
- Responsible for management of importing and exporting user/group/computer accounts;
- Troubleshooting network problems, identifying major problems and referring recurring, on-going and highly complex problems to the appropriate channels for resolution;
- Responsible for testing and piloting of new hardware and software;
- Responsible for computer hardware and software upgrades and installation including ensuring the maintenance and upkeep of inventory using the District work order system and reporting variances from the District lists;
- Responsible for support and administration of Active Directory;
- Providing support and administration of local security, file system access, and access to local resources;
- Assisting and liaising with vendors regarding problem resolution and clarification of upgrades;
- Receiving telephone inquiries and e-mails from District employees and maintaining a detailed log of the nature and follow-up the inquiry;
- Maintaining a working knowledge of district operational/personnel policies related to the position;
- Maintaining confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the district and its operation;
- Participating and offering assistance to all areas of the Technology team; working on committees as required and offering input in all matters concerning operations;
- Performing all other such duties as may be assigned by the IT Manager or designate;
- The incumbent is responsible for keeping up to date on current and emerging technologies.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Grade 12 diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by completion of a recognized post-secondary computer technology program or equivalent. A current technology certification is also required. A minimum of 3 to 5 years of related work experience with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in technical support in a Windows environment. A valid Class 5 Driver’s License. As well, incumbents also require the following:

- Proven ability to use tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality in matters pertaining to the School District;
- Working knowledge of WHMIS and WorkSafe BC occupational health and safety regulations and the demonstrated ability to work in a manner that recognizes personal safety and the safety of others;
- Ability to be flexible, adaptable and resilient to change;
- Ability to explain complex or simple instructions or information clearly to others;
- Considerable experience with various types of computer equipment, file servers, peripherals, software installation in multi-platform environments including knowledge of databases and data entry skills;
- Proven understanding of networking (wired/wireless) methods, protocols and hardware (e.g. 802.x, Ethernet, TCP/IP, etc.);
- Proven understanding of general security access, server to server replication and networking;
- Proven troubleshooting experience and an aptitude for timely problem solving, analysis and resolution;
- Working knowledge of current server and workstation operating systems;
- Working knowledge of Google G-Suite & Google Apps for Education experience (GAFE);
- Proven ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving materials, equipment and supplies including significant levels of manual dexterity for the purpose of operating keyboards, mouse, hand/power tools and handling computer components.
