Job Title: Electrical Engineer – Heavy Industrial ProjectsJob Description
This role offers the opportunity to provide electrical engineering and design support for heavy industrial projects in sectors such as mining, oil and gas, and pulp and paper. You will work on both brownfield and greenfield facilities, including upgrades, retrofits, and major capital expansions, and will contribute throughout the project lifecycle from concept design through procurement and implementation. The position involves developing robust electrical designs, supporting equipment selection, and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient industrial power systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop electrical engineering designs and detailed specifications for heavy industrial facilities, including brownfield upgrades, retrofits, and greenfield capital projects.
- Perform grounding system design and analysis to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Design and coordinate Protection & Control (P&C) systems, including breaker and fuse sizing, protection device selection, and development of overall protection schemes down to the device level.
- Prepare technical specifications and support the design, procurement, and integration of low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage electrical equipment and switchgear.
- Support the selection and application of electrical equipment such as motors, pumps, transformers, switchgear, and circuit breakers for industrial power distribution systems.
- Develop single-line diagrams and related documentation to clearly represent power distribution and protection schemes.
- Perform short-circuit and power distribution analyses to validate equipment ratings and system performance.
- Assist with the development of bills of materials and ensure that designs align with project budgets and schedules.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, providing electrical engineering input and technical support during project planning and execution.
- Provide ongoing technical support during construction, commissioning, and operations as needed, helping troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues.
- Ensure that all electrical designs and specifications adhere to relevant codes, standards, and best practices for industrial systems.
- Communicate effectively with project stakeholders to clarify requirements, present design solutions, and support decision-making.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent electrical engineering degree.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation.
- Minimum 3 years of electrical engineering experience in mining, oil and gas, or pulp and paper industrial environments.
- Hands-on experience with electrical design engineering for industrial systems, including power distribution and motor control.
- Proficiency in developing single-line diagrams and related electrical design documentation.
- Demonstrated experience in grounding system design and analysis.
- Strong expertise in Protection & Control (P&C), including breaker and fuse sizing, protection device selection, and detailed protection scheme development down to the device level.
- Experience with design, specification, and procurement of low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage electrical equipment and switchgear.
- Knowledge of and experience working with pumps, motors, switchgear, circuit breakers, and transformers in industrial applications.
- Ability to perform short-circuit studies and understand their impact on equipment ratings and protection schemes.
- Solid understanding of industrial electrical engineering principles, standards, and safety practices.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams and communicate technical concepts clearly.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience running arc flash studies using ETAP or similar power system analysis software.
- Familiarity with protection and control schemes for complex industrial power systems.
- Experience preparing bills of materials and coordinating with procurement teams.
- Background working on both brownfield and greenfield industrial projects.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting client deadlines.
- Interest in developing broad engineering experience across multiple industrial sectors rather than specializing narrowly.
- Commitment to long-term professional growth within a consulting engineering environment.
Work Environment
The role is primarily based in an office environment, with an expectation of regular in-person presence to support collaboration and project delivery. There is flexibility to work from home when needed to accommodate personal and project demands, provided client deadlines are met. You will work within a smaller, privately owned engineering firm where team members collaborate closely and have direct access to leadership. This is a Contract position based out of Burnaby, BC.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $75.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
