This role focuses on the exterior and interior design of lighting systems for locomotives and rail passenger vehicles. The Mechanical Designer produces detailed 3D models, general assemblies, and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks, while developing innovative engineered solutions that meet or exceed customer requirements. The position requires strong attention to detail, adherence to design procedures, and a commitment to delivering high-quality designs on schedule.
Responsibilities
- Design exterior and interior lighting systems for locomotive and rail passenger vehicles.
- Produce detailed 3D models, general assemblies, and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks.
- Create and maintain detailed drawings and bills of materials for all assigned projects.
- Revise designs and drawings based on internal feedback and customer input to ensure all requirements are met.
- Develop creative and innovative engineered solutions that meet or exceed customer performance, quality, and cost expectations.
- Keep accurate project design records and files in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain an organized filing system for all CAD files using SolidWorks PDM and internal standards.
- Ensure all designs adhere to project timelines and schedules, proactively managing priorities to meet deadlines.
- Incorporate GD&T principles into drawings to clearly define tolerances and functional requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing and electronics, to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
- Consider shock and vibration requirements in designs for rail applications to ensure durability and reliability.
- Support continuous improvement of design processes, methods, and standards within the engineering team.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience as a Mechanical Designer.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, particularly for sheet metal design.
- Experience producing detailed 3D models, general assemblies, and fabrication drawings.
- Knowledge and design experience for manufacturing processes including CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication.
- Knowledge of GD&T and the ability to apply it effectively in drawings.
- Basic understanding of electronics and printed circuit boards (PCB) to support lighting system integration.
- Experience with 3D modeling software such as CATIA, Inventor, Pro-E, or Solid Edge.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to support collaboration and documentation.
- Demonstrated capacity for analysis, synthesis, and innovation in mechanical design.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks while adhering to project timelines and schedules.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Specific experience with SolidWorks is considered a strong asset.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM for CAD file management.
- Knowledge of additional manufacturing processes such as metal and plastic extruding, fabrication, and 3D printing.
- Exposure to injection molding, die-casting, and stamping processes is an asset.
- Familiarity with shock and vibration considerations in mechanical design for rail or similar applications.
- Experience working on lighting systems or products for transportation or industrial environments.
- Interest in contributing to innovative LED-based lighting solutions for rail applications.
Work Environment
This position is based on-site at a facility in Mississauga and operates on a five-day workweek, with some flexibility granted when needed. The role is embedded in an engineering and manufacturing environment focused on complete interior and exterior lighting systems for rail applications. The organization has a long-standing presence in the rail and public transportation industries and emphasizes continuous innovation in LED technology. A new facility is being built, with plans to move operations there, offering a modern workspace tailored to advanced design and manufacturing activities.

Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $40.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
