Job Title: Software Engineer
Job Description
This Software Engineer role focuses on architecting, designing, and integrating advanced AI/ML capabilities into mission-critical defense software systems within a tactical IT environment. You will play a key role in the lifecycle management of AI-enabled solutions, provide strategic technical leadership, and ensure robust, reliable software engineering practices that support complex military command and control systems.
Responsibilities
- Review, analyze, and provide system architecture recommendations for software and application interface documentation, with a specific focus on integrating AI and machine learning modules.
- Recommend system-level design solutions to bridge capability gaps by leveraging applied AI technologies in mission-critical defense software.
- Oversee lifecycle management of AI-enabled C4ISR systems, including witnessing and supporting integration testing for autonomous sensor fusion and modeling and simulation components.
- Advise leadership on the strategic implementation of AI frameworks within tactical IT environments, ensuring alignment with operational and technical objectives.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-fidelity, intelligent defense systems, providing clear technical direction and coordination across stakeholders.
- Prepare rigorous technical documentation and procurement materials to support the acquisition, integration, and maintenance of AI-based applications and software suites.
- Conduct technical definition studies and options analyses to evaluate the performance, reliability, and suitability of AI algorithms in Land C4ISR environments.
- Provide expert advice, guidance, and recommendations on complex technical issues to support decision-making for stakeholders involved in IT tactical systems, frameworks, and strategies.
- Communicate information technology frameworks and strategies clearly to both management and technical staff, ensuring shared understanding and effective execution.
- Communicate system engineering direction for projects and systems, including architecture, design, integration, and lifecycle considerations.
- Perform strategic, operational, and tactical planning for projects and systems to ensure alignment with broader organizational and program strategies.
- Manage, analyze, design, model, and implement software systems in client/server or collaborative environments, ensuring scalability and robustness.
- Apply communication engineering principles, including hardware, software, and network aspects, or specialty engineering disciplines such as security, modeling and simulation, and ISR.
- Engineer software for real-time, distributed, embedded, or mission-critical systems environments, maintaining high standards of reliability and performance.
- Lead software integration efforts for hardware and software components, including COTS and custom-developed solutions, into new or existing systems.
- Contribute to software development in domains such as firepower, ISR, C4ISR, or modeling and simulation, ensuring domain-specific requirements are met.
- Manage the full system lifecycle for software systems, from concept and design through implementation, integration, and sustainment.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in software engineering.
- Strong proficiency in application and/or embedded software development using languages such as C++, C#, Java, and C.
- Experience working with military standards in software engineering contexts.
- Knowledge and hands-on experience with AI and machine learning, including artificial intelligence frameworks and large language models.
- Experience developing and deploying software on Windows and Linux operating systems.
- Must be eligible for Canadian Government Secret clearance.
Assets
- Experience in autonomous sensor fusion and modeling and simulation components.
- Experience preparing detailed technical and procurement documentation for complex software and AI-based systems.
- Exposure to tactical IT environments and defense-focused integrated product teams.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary technical teams in high-stakes environments.
- Strong communication skills for presenting complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to conduct options analyses and technical definition studies for advanced AI algorithms and systems.

This role is based onsite in the Ottawa region.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Ottawa, ON.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $70.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
