About The Role
The Plant Superintendent provides operational leadership and oversight to ensure safe, efficient, reliable, and compliant plant operations. This role leads frontline supervisors and production teams to achieve business objectives related to safety, quality, productivity, cost, and customer service, while ensuring compliance with ADM standards and regulatory requirements.
The Plant Superintendent drives operational excellence by optimizing processes, improving equipment reliability, developing talent, and leading continuous improvement initiatives. The role monitors production performance identifies opportunities to reduce losses and improve efficiency, and works closely with Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Safety, and Supply Chain to resolve issues and strengthen overall plant performance.
As a key link between plant leadership and daily operations, the Plant Superintendent ensures production goals are achieved while fostering a culture of safety, food safety, accountability, teamwork, respect, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership in safety, food safety, quality, environmental compliance, regulatory requirements, cost management, employee development, and operational performance.
This position oversees approximately 95 unionized hourly employees and 18 managers and reports directly to the Plant Manager.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction to supervisors, production teams, and hourly employees, establishing clear expectations and accountability for safety, quality, productivity, and operational performance.
- Lead daily plant operations by monitoring production performance, executing production plans, resolving operational issues, and ensuring production, quality, efficiency, and cost objectives are achieved.
- Champion a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with ADM safety policies, procedures, food safety requirements, environmental standards, and applicable regulations. Lead investigations and corrective actions for safety, quality, and operational incidents.
- Analyze production and operational metrics to identify losses and improvement opportunities, implement corrective actions, and drive sustainable improvements in productivity, efficiency, and cost performance.
- Lead continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives using Lean Manufacturing, root cause analysis, and structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Partner with Maintenance and Engineering to optimize equipment performance, improve reliability, reduce downtime, and support process improvements, equipment upgrades, and capital projects.
- Collaborate with Quality, Safety, Supply Chain, and other cross-functional teams to improve plant reliability, product quality, service, and overall operational performance.
- Support production scheduling and resource planning to optimize workforce utilization, materials, and plant capacity while managing operational costs and reducing waste.
- Coach, mentor, and develop supervisors and employees through effective training, performance management, workforce planning, and succession development.
- Establish effective communication routines, including shift meetings, production reviews, and performance updates, to ensure alignment between plant leadership and daily operations.
- Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, respect, and continuous improvement while demonstrating ADM Core Values in all decisions and actions.
- Support the development and execution of departmental goals and strategic initiatives in alignment with overall plant objectives.
- Maintain compliance with established product, quality, housekeeping, environmental, food safety, and operational standards and support the facility’s Quality and Food Safety Management Systems.
Required Skills And Qualifications
- Strong manufacturing, operational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of production processes, equipment reliability, Lean/continuous improvement, and performance management.
- Strong understanding of safety, quality, food safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to analyze operational data, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and influence at all levels.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and standard computer applications.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including 24/7 operations, and safely navigate plant environments requiring PPE.
Education And Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in the fields of Engineering, Milling Science, Production Manufacturing, Technology or Food Processing.
- Post-secondary education in a related field preferred; equivalent education, technical training, and experience will be considered.
- 5–8 years of progressive manufacturing, production, or operations experience, including leadership of production teams.
- Experience in food processing, grain handling, flour milling, or another continuous manufacturing environment highly preferred.
- Experience with operational performance, cost management, reliability, and continuous improvement preferred.
