Original job description

Are you a decisive engineering leader who can solve complex technical challenges while building and developing a high-performing team? Do you thrive in fast-paced environments where mechanical design, manufacturing, automation, and project execution must work together to deliver practical solutions?

Join Advanced Material Handling, a leader in conveyor and material handling solutions. We’re seeking an Engineering Manager to provide technical direction, lead and develop a small but growing multidisciplinary engineering team, and drive innovation across design, manufacturing, automation, and project delivery. This role reports directly to the COO.

Why This Role is a Great Opportunity:

Leadership with Impact: Take ownership of a small but growing multidisciplinary engineering team, set clear direction, strengthen engineering standards, and develop future technical leaders.

High-Value Technical Work: Apply your expertise in conveyors, chains, sprockets, shafts, and drive components to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions for diverse industries.

Cross-Functional Influence: Work directly with sales, operations, and clients to ensure technical excellence while balancing business needs.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation: Maximize engineering effectiveness by improving design methods, standardizing workflows, strengthening DFMA practices, and advancing automation and product-development initiatives.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Provide clear technical direction and inspire strong performance across the engineering team.
  • Make timely, well-informed decisions that resolve technical and project challenges.
  • Deliver reliable, cost-effective, and manufacturable designs that meet client expectations.
  • Strengthen collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, and operations.
  • Drive a culture of safety, compliance, and professional integrity.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting mechanical design, controls, automation, and project execution.
  • Set priorities and guide technical decision-making in dynamic project environments.
  • Review and approve engineering calculations, SolidWorks models, equipment layouts, manufacturing drawings, and designs for conveyors, drive components, and integrated automation systems.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, client requirements, and internal quality benchmarks.
  • Allocate resources across multiple simultaneous projects and resolve conflicts in scope or timelines.
  • Partner with operations to deliver designs optimized for cost, safety, and manufacturability.
  • Champion lean practices, DFMA principles, and product improvement initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain SolidWorks and PDM standards, including modelling practices, drawing templates, design libraries, revision control, release workflows, and engineering change discipline.
  • Support R&D, new product development, and the practical adoption of automation, robotics, controls, and other emerging technologies that improve safety, productivity, quality, and equipment performance.
  • Represent engineering in client meetings, technical discussions, and stakeholder reviews.

What You Bring?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership or senior technical role.
  • Eligible for registration as a P.Eng. with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia; an active P.Eng. designation is considered an asset.
  • Deep technical knowledge of conveyors, chain, sprockets, shafts, and drive components.
  • Proven ability to make decisive, high-impact engineering decisions under pressure.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and industrial design standards.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, including complex assemblies, equipment layouts, drawing standards, design review, revision control, and engineering data management.
  • Experience in heavy manufacturing, mining, forestry, bulk material handling, or related industries preferred.
  • Experience with industrial automation, robotics, controls integration, machine safety, sensors, PLC-based systems, or automated material handling equipment is considered a strong asset.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Final compensation will be determined by the successful candidate’s experience, technical expertise, and leadership capabilities.
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits (after 3-month probation)
  • Dental and vision care
  • Disability and life insurance
  • Yearly Healthy Living Benefit
