Original job description

Job Summary

The Area Manager is responsible for supervising and managing all sales, warehousing, and distribution functions at the branch, in coordination with the Head Office. Approximately 70% of the Area Manager’s time will be dedicated to sales-related activities, with the remainder focused on logistics and operational oversight. This includes accountability for inbound and outbound freight, as well as ensuring compliance with legislative, safety, and organizational policies and procedures. The Area Manager will accomplish effective oversight through strong leadership and sound decision-making skills.

Essential Functions

Branch Operations & Leadership

Plan and direct daily branch operations, including assigning duties and ensuring adequate coverage.
Maintain open communication between Head Office and the branch.
Manage and facilitate lease operator relationships.
Communicate delays or variances in inbound and outbound freight to the appropriate parties.
Dispatch fuel trucks when the dispatcher is off shift, and assist with fuel and lubricant deliveries and daily operations as required.

Sales & Client Relations

Identify, pursue, and secure new clients through prospecting, and perform internal and external sales of AFD services.
Maintain and grow relationships with existing clients by providing exceptional service and identifying new opportunities.
Prepare and deliver sales presentations, proposals, and contracts tailored to client needs.
Meet or exceed sales targets and performance metrics set by management.
Monitor market and customer trends to anticipate client demand and potential volume growth.
Collaborate with internal teams to meet client requirements, ensure successful service delivery, and resolve client concerns and complaints.

People Management

Recruit and train staff with support from the Human Resources and Safety departments.
Orient new hires to the facility and explain their training schedule.
Create and maintain employee schedules to balance workload and ensure all shifts are covered.
Review and approve timecards, and submit bi-weekly payroll information (timecards, payroll changes, new hires, and terminations) to Human Resources, with Director approval where required.
Monitor staff performance and complete performance reviews for the branch.
Apply the progressive discipline policy through counselling sessions and written warnings as needed.
Conduct suspension and termination meetings in conjunction with management.

Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

Comply with and enforce all company policies, HSE practices and procedures, and applicable legislative and regulatory requirements.
Develop and enforce security and safety practices to maintain a safe working environment.
Train employees on safe work practices, including proper equipment use, cleaning guidelines, and WHMIS procedures.
Lead and/or attend weekly safety meetings.
Complete incident reports for all accidents and near misses.
Maintain complete documentation for regulated products and hazardous materials.
Ensure all legislated permits are obtained and kept in good standing.

Inventory & Fuel Management

Maintain inventory procedures and proper stocking, and investigate and resolve discrepancies between inventory records and actual stock.
Monitor and adjust fuel levels and inventories across the area to stay within min-max criteria.
Perform fuel audits.

Facilities & Equipment

Maintain the branch building, equipment, and property, and respond to maintenance needs.
Inspect cardlock and tank farm sites, and schedule maintenance and repairs as required.
Report and help troubleshoot branch and area equipment, including cardlocks and product delivery equipment.

Financial Planning & Reporting

Participate in budget planning and forecasting for volume, revenue, and truck utilization.
Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports, including weekly reports on sales, customer trends, and complaints.

Other

Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
