Drivers can expect to spend multiple consecutive days on the road and may be required to complete resets away from home. Hours of work follow the applicable governing hours-of-service regulations. They work primarily in the cab while driving and outside the vehicle when loading or unloading fuel, and are exposed to a wide range of road, weather and traffic conditions. Drivers typically work independently without direct supervision but must maintain regular communication with Dispatch at scheduled intervals. Chaining up may be required. Overtime and weekend work are common.

Perform pre-trip, en-route and post-trip inspections on equipment and load to ensure safety and roadworthiness.
Comply with applicable legislation, including safe operation, carriage of goods, hours of service, occupational health and safety, transportation of dangerous goods, customs and immigration, and weights and dimensions.

Check vehicles before driving to ensure mechanical, safety and emergency equipment is in good working order.
Perform minor roadside repairs, such as lights, loose fittings and airlines.
Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations or damage to vehicles.
Check all load-related documentation to ensure it is complete and accurate.
Plan or adjust routes based on changing road, weather and traffic conditions using GPS or other navigation tools.
Use mobile communication devices and company-approved technology to communicate with Dispatch and operational personnel.
Maintain logs of working hours and vehicle service and repair status, following applicable provincial regulations.
Record and maintain required documentation, including the driver logbook, bills of lading, and cargo, distance and fuel consumption records.
Communicate effectively with the public, government officials, customers and co-workers.
