About The Role
The Estimator/Applications Engineer position is based within the Electrical Division in Edmonton (EDE) and reports directly to the Estimating Supervisor within the Sales & Estimating department. This role is pivotal in preparing competitive technical proposals and accurate cost estimates for switchgear and electrical buildings. The successful candidate will serve as a key technical resource, supporting both the sales and project execution teams. The role involves analyzing customer project documentation, developing detailed proposals aligned with customer specifications and industry standards, and providing technical guidance to internal teams. The Estimator/Applications Engineer will also be responsible for creating basis of estimate and schedule documents, conducting cost analysis, and presenting proposals to clients and stakeholders. Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Electrical Engineering or a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation from an accredited institution.
- Valid Journeyman Ticket is considered an asset.
- Experience with Metal Building Systems and Electrical Switchgear is advantageous.
- 1-3 years of experience in estimating or a related electrical field is preferred.
- Familiarity with vendors and components used in commercial and industrial power distribution, motor controls, process control, and lighting projects.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and advanced Excel skills are highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of local electrical codes such as the Canadian Electrical Code and National Building Code.
Responsibilities
- Review customer project documentation, including specifications, data sheets, and drawings, to fully understand technical and commercial requirements.
- Develop detailed and comprehensive proposals that demonstrate a clear understanding of project needs while ensuring compliance with customer specifications, industry standards, and local codes.
- Include appropriate comments and exceptions to communicate Powell’s compliance and capabilities to the customer effectively.
- Create Basis of Estimate and Basis of Schedule documents to accompany proposals, ensuring clarity and transparency.
- Provide technical leadership and support to supporting departments such as sales, engineering, and operations.
- Collaborate with project teams to utilize estimating tools and processes, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness of proposals.
- Prepare and deliver proposal overviews to clients and internal stakeholders, articulating technical details and value propositions.
- Analyze product-specific cost data, conduct statistical and performance analysis, and work with engineering and manufacturing teams to incorporate accurate labor and material forecasting into pricing models.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to estimating processes and tools.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.
