About The Company

Powell Industries is a global leader in the manufacturing and field servicing of switchgear and electrical enclosures, with a rich history spanning over 70 years. As a subsidiary of Powell Industries based in Houston, Texas, our Canadian operations are headquartered in Acheson, Calgary, and Montreal. We are committed to delivering innovative electrical solutions tailored to meet the diverse needs of our clients across various industries. Our reputation is built on quality, reliability, and a customer-centric approach, making us a trusted partner in electrical infrastructure development. We foster a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and professional growth, ensuring our team members are equipped with the latest industry knowledge and skills.

About The Role

The Estimator/Applications Engineer position is a vital role within Powell Industries' Electrical Division in Edmonton. Reporting directly to the Estimating Supervisor within the Sales & Estimating department, this role is responsible for preparing competitive technical proposals and precise cost estimates for switchgear and electrical building projects. The successful candidate will serve as a technical and commercial resource, supporting sales initiatives and project execution. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals with a background in electrical engineering or related fields to contribute to high-profile projects, develop their expertise, and grow within a dynamic organization. The role requires a detail-oriented mindset, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to ensure project success.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Electrical Engineering or a C.E.T. designation from an accredited technical institute, college, or university.
Valid Journeyman Ticket is considered an asset.
Familiarity with Metal Building Systems and Electrical Switchgear is advantageous.
1-3 years of experience in estimating or a related role is preferred.
Experience working with vendors and components for commercial and industrial power distribution, motor controls, process control, and lighting projects.
Proficiency with AutoCAD and advanced Excel skills are highly desirable.
Strong understanding of local electrical codes such as the Canadian Electrical Code and National Building Code.
Knowledge of cost estimating concepts, techniques, and workflows, including documentation and version control of estimate input data.

Responsibilities

Review customer project documentation, including specifications, data sheets, and drawings, to fully understand technical and commercial requirements.
Develop detailed and comprehensive proposals that accurately reflect project needs while ensuring compliance with customer specifications, industry standards, and local codes.
Communicate Powell's compliance status through clear comments and exceptions within proposals.
Create Basis of Estimate and Basis of Schedule documents to accompany each proposal, providing transparency and clarity.
Provide technical leadership and support to sales teams and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
Collaborate with project teams to utilize estimating tools and processes, ensuring the accuracy and competitiveness of proposals.
Prepare and deliver proposal overviews to clients and internal teams as needed.
Analyze product-specific cost data, utilizing statistical tools and performance metrics to refine estimates.
Work closely with manufacturing, engineering, and operations departments to incorporate accurate labor and material forecasting factors into pricing models.
Perform additional duties as assigned, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives within the department.

Benefits

Powell Industries offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support the health, well-being, and professional development of our employees. Our offerings include competitive salary packages, RRSP matching programs, extensive health and dental coverage, and life insurance. We also prioritize work-life balance through flexible working arrangements and provide ongoing training and career development opportunities. Employees are encouraged to grow their skills and advance within the organization, supported by a collaborative and safety-focused work environment.

Equal Opportunity

Powell Industries is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering an inclusive workplace. We value diversity and do not discriminate based on race, gender, age, religion, disability, or any other protected characteristic. We believe that a diverse workforce enhances our ability to serve our clients and innovate within our industry. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis; sponsorship opportunities are limited and considered on a case-by-case basis based on business needs and legal requirements.
