About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Data Developer (Engineer) to join our dynamic team. This role is instrumental in establishing a robust data foundation for Contact Distributor, our new platform designed to centralize and manage broker and distributor master data. The platform aims to replace fragmented legacy systems, including mainframes, Microsoft Access databases, and Excel-based tools, with a trusted, governed view of brokerages, broker codes, and organizational hierarchies. As a key member of the initial product squad, you will be responsible for profiling, cleansing, migrating, and integrating legacy data. Your expertise will help embed data quality, governance, and operational reliability into the platform from inception, ensuring it meets the highest standards of accuracy and security.
You will work in a self-managed, cross-functional team alongside a Tech Lead, software engineers, architects, business experts, and a Product Owner. The ideal candidate is a hands-on senior data engineer capable of independently designing, building, and maintaining production-grade data pipelines. You should be comfortable working with incomplete information, validating assumptions against real data, and taking ownership from discovery through to production support. Your ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders will be critical to the success of this initiative.
Qualifications
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Candidates should have at least 8+ years of experience in data engineering or software engineering, with a minimum of 3+ years in a senior or lead role. Proven experience in designing, building, and operating scalable ETL/ELT pipelines, whether through code or ETL tools, is essential. Experience in migrating data from legacy systems, including mainframes, is highly valued. Strong SQL and relational data modeling skills, including performance tuning, are necessary. Proficiency in Python or Java for data pipeline development and familiarity with AWS ecosystem services are required. Candidates should also demonstrate a solid understanding of CI/CD practices, version control, automated testing, and observability. Leadership qualities, initiative, and the ability to influence and challenge decisions constructively are important. Candidates must be authorized to work in Canada; bilingualism in French and English is preferred for those in Quebec.
Preferred qualifications include experience with AWS data services such as Glue, EMR, and Athena, as well as Spark (PySpark or Java/Scala). Knowledge of ETL/integration tools like Informatica, Talend, or DataStage, and enterprise schedulers like Control-M, is advantageous. Experience with change data capture (CDC), event-driven architecture, Master Data Management concepts, and familiarity with Databricks or Snowflake will be considered a plus. Industry experience in P&C insurance, particularly in broker distribution, is also preferred.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Data Architect to co-design and implement the target data model, including hierarchies, historization, audit/versioning, and crosswalks from legacy data to golden records. Validate models against actual legacy data to ensure accuracy.
- Design, develop, and maintain batch and incremental ETL/ELT pipelines on AWS, sourcing data from mainframes, flat files, and databases into layered data lakes (raw, standardized, curated). Ensure pipelines are configuration-driven, restartable, idempotent, monitored, and include robust error handling, orchestration, and scheduling.
- Lead data migration efforts, including extraction, profiling, cleansing, normalization, matching, merging, and reconciliation during parallel runs and cutover phases.
- Implement automated data quality controls based on business rules, ensuring data lineage, cataloging, security, and cost management across pipelines.
- Publish trusted data to downstream systems such as reporting platforms and legacy backfeeds, working closely with Java backend teams to ensure seamless integration.
- Apply DevOps principles by implementing unit, integration, and automated data tests, leveraging CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code, while adhering to security and governance standards.
- Provide technical guidance, promote best practices through code reviews and documentation, and challenge decisions with evidence from data analysis. Contribute to design discussions, sprint planning, and stakeholder communication within an Agile environment focused on incremental delivery.
