Original job description

About The Company

The National Bank of Canada is a leading financial institution committed to providing comprehensive banking solutions to individuals, businesses, and communities across the country. Renowned for its customer-centric approach, innovative services, and strong community involvement, the bank strives to foster long-term relationships built on trust and mutual growth. With a rich history of stability and growth, the bank continuously invests in technology and talent to enhance its offerings and maintain its position as a trusted partner in financial success.

About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Data Scientist to join our Western Excellence Center AI and Transformation Delivery team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics within a dynamic banking environment. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will be responsible for designing, deploying, and operationalizing advanced data science solutions that directly impact client experience, risk management, and operational efficiency. Your expertise will help shape innovative strategies and foster a data-driven culture across the organization. This position requires a strategic thinker with strong technical skills, capable of translating complex business needs into actionable data science projects. The role offers a hybrid work environment with flexible scheduling to support work-life balance and professional development.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in computer science, engineering, data science, statistics, or a related field, along with 3 to 5 years of experience in delivering production-level analytics or machine learning solutions. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, Rust, JavaScript, C, C++, SAS, or R is essential, along with experience working with relational databases. Candidates should have a solid understanding of data wrangling, preprocessing, visualization, and ETL processes, utilizing tools like SAS Viya or equivalent platforms. Practical knowledge of model management, CI/CD pipelines, source control, and modern development environments is required. Familiarity with containerization, orchestration, cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure, and deployment practices is highly desirable. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Frame high-impact analytics and AI projects by collaborating with business partners to clarify needs and translate them into effective data science solutions.
Design, develop, validate, and deploy machine learning, statistical, and generative AI models, including large language models and retrieval-augmented generation techniques.
Perform exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, and model experimentation, presenting insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
Implement robust model lifecycle practices, including monitoring, continuous integration and delivery, issue resolution, and maintaining audit-ready documentation.
Establish and promote best practices, standards, reusable patterns, and comprehensive documentation for models, data lineage, and AI processes.
Support delivery activities such as planning, testing, troubleshooting, demonstrations, and training to facilitate adoption of new methodologies and tools across teams.

Benefits

Joining our team offers competitive compensation along with a comprehensive suite of benefits designed to promote your wellbeing and that of your family. These include a health and wellness program with multiple options, flexible group insurance plans, a generous pension scheme, and an Employee Share Ownership Plan. Additionally, employees have access to an employee and family assistance program, preferential banking services, and involvement in community initiatives. We also provide telemedicine services, a virtual sleep clinic, and ongoing learning opportunities through our Data Academy, language training, Harvard Learning Center, and coaching support. Our flexible work environment and advanced collaboration tools foster a positive employee experience, encouraging innovation, feedback, and continuous development.

Equal Opportunity

The National Bank of Canada is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated and all employees are valued. We provide accessible recruitment processes and accommodations for candidates with disabilities to ensure equal opportunities for all. Our core values of partnership, agility, and empowerment underpin our efforts to create a barrier-free workplace. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and encourage applications from individuals who can bring unique perspectives to our team. Join us in making a positive impact and advancing your career within a people-first organization dedicated to growth, inclusion, and excellence.
