About The Role

IBM is seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to help develop and operate foundational backend systems for a cloud data streaming platform. In this role, you will contribute to a highly available, scalable metadata store that serves as a source of truth for services across the cloud platform. Its low-latency read and write APIs, along with real-time data streaming capabilities, support applications that depend on reliable, timely information.

You will take ownership of critical distributed services and help evolve a self-service platform designed to simplify how teams manage and access metadata. Working across cloud environments and services, you will address challenging engineering problems and help ensure systems are secure, resilient, and straightforward to operate. This role is suited to an engineer who can work independently, communicate openly, and collaborate effectively while delivering high-impact technical improvements.

Qualifications

Applicants should have at least six years of industry experience designing, building, and operating large-scale backend services in production. Strong programming and algorithmic skills are required, along with proficiency in Go or a similar programming language. You should be comfortable reasoning about concurrency, correctness, and race-condition prevention in complex systems.

Relevant experience includes working with distributed data stores such as DynamoDB, Cosmos DB, Spanner, Cassandra, or comparable technologies, as well as hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider: AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure. Candidates should understand observability and operational excellence, including service-level objectives, on-call responsibilities, incident response, and postmortems. Strong written and verbal communication, sound engineering practices, and the ability to manage work independently are essential. Familiarity with Kubernetes operators and controller patterns, Kafka, event ordering, idempotency, or at-least-once and exactly-once delivery is an asset.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and evolve the metadata platform, including its read, write, and streaming APIs. Develop and operate resilient, scalable backend services across multiple clouds and integrated systems. Address distributed-systems challenges involving availability, consistency, partitioning, sharding, and scale. Improve the reliability, security, performance, and operational simplicity of production services. Use monitoring and service-level objectives to assess system health, participate in on-call and incident-response processes, and contribute to thorough postmortems. Independently identify high-impact opportunities, define technical approaches, and drive projects through delivery. Contribute to code reviews, automated testing, documentation, and constructive team communication.
