Original job description

THE COMPANY

AIP Asset Management is an award-winning Canadian alternative investment management firm founded in 2013. The firm focuses on differentiated private-market and alternative strategies, with particular expertise in convertible private debt and access to late-stage private companies. AIP's platform includes the AIP Convertible Private Debt Fund LP and XIPO LP, giving qualified investors exposure to strategies outside traditional public equity and fixed-income markets.

AIP's convertible private debt strategy provides senior secured, asset-based loans to North American small-cap public companies, with the potential to participate in equity upside through conversion features. XIPO LP provides Canadian accredited investors access to high-growth private companies before an IPO or other liquidity event.

THE OPPORTUNITY

AIP is seeking a VP Business Development to establish and grow its presence in Winnipeg and the broader Western Canadian market. This is a senior, entrepreneurial role with two mandates: raising capital for AIP's suite of investment products, and building strategic partnerships with smaller asset managers, intermediary channels and family offices. The ideal candidate is an experienced business-development or alternatives professional who can build trusted relationships with advisors, portfolio managers, family offices, partner firms and other sophisticated investors.

AIP is looking to partner with entrepreneurs in Manitoba and Western Canada and find synergies to grow together. The VP will represent a differentiated suite of alternative investment solutions, including convertible debt, alternative income and pre-IPO/private-company strategies, while identifying partnership opportunities that create value for both AIP and its partners. The mandate combines capital raising, partnership development, investor education and long-term relationship management, with direct access to senior leadership and meaningful autonomy in building the market.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead capital raising for AIP's suite of products and business-development activity across Winnipeg, Manitoba and the broader Western Canadian market.
  • Develop and deepen relationships with investment advisors, discretionary portfolio managers, dealer platforms, exempt-market participants, family offices and sophisticated investors.
  • Identify, negotiate and build strategic partnerships with smaller asset managers, intermediary channels and family offices that expand AIP's reach and grow assets across its suite of products.
  • Seek out entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial firms in Manitoba and Western Canada, and develop partnerships that create synergies and allow AIP and its partners to grow together.
  • Position AIP's alternative investment strategies within client portfolios, with particular emphasis on convertible private debt, private credit and pre-IPO/private-company exposure.
  • Build a disciplined territory plan and pipeline, identifying high-potential firms, advisors, partners and investor relationships and converting those relationships into sustainable fund inflows and long-term partnerships.
  • Present investment strategies clearly through one-on-one meetings, group presentations, webinars, roadshows and industry events.
  • Translate complex structures, risk/return characteristics, liquidity considerations and portfolio applications into clear, practical investment discussions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of AIP's funds, portfolio positioning, offering documents and relevant capital-market developments.
  • Partner with investment, marketing, operations, inside-sales and compliance colleagues to support investors and distribution partners.
  • Capture business-development activity, investor and partnership pipeline development and asset flows in the firm's CRM and provide regular market intelligence and territory reporting to leadership.
  • Act as AIP's senior representative in the Winnipeg market and help build the firm's long-term presence and reputation in Western Canada.

PRODUCT PLATFORM

AIP Convertible Private Debt Fund LP

An offering-memorandum limited partnership focused on senior secured convertible asset-based loans to North American small-cap public companies. The strategy seeks attractive risk-adjusted returns and capital protection while retaining potential equity upside through convertible structures.

XIPO LP

A private-market strategy designed to provide Canadian accredited investors access to large, high-growth private companies before they become public. The product gives the VP a differentiated pre-IPO offering alongside AIP's credit platform.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • At least 5 years of successful business development, fund sales, investment distribution, wholesaling or related capital-raising experience; deeper experience is preferred for this senior mandate.
  • Demonstrated success raising assets through independent advisor, portfolio-manager and/or private-wealth channels.
  • Strong existing relationships in Winnipeg, Manitoba and ideally across the Prairies.
  • Experience building partnerships with asset managers, dealers, intermediaries or family offices, and a network among entrepreneurs and business owners in Manitoba and Western Canada.
  • Practical knowledge of alternative investments such as private credit, hedge-fund strategies, private equity, venture capital/private-market funds or pre-IPO investments.
  • Ability to understand and explain convertible debt, including the interaction between secured lending, downside protection and potential equity participation.
  • Credibility with sophisticated investors and the judgment to lead consultative conversations rather than transactional product pitches.
  • Entrepreneurial, self-directed approach and comfort building a territory and partner network with significant autonomy.
  • Strong presentation, relationship-management and pipeline-management skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics or a related discipline. Relevant industry designations and registrations are assets where applicable.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

  • A visible and credible AIP presence in the Winnipeg investment community.
  • A high-quality, active pipeline of advisors, portfolio managers, family offices and other qualified investors.
  • Active partnerships with smaller asset managers, intermediary channels, family offices and Western Canadian entrepreneurs that create measurable synergies and growth for AIP and its partners.
  • Consistent growth in new investor relationships and assets raised across AIP's alternative strategies.
  • Strong product fluency and the ability to match the appropriate AIP strategy to investor objectives and portfolio needs.
  • Long-term relationships built on responsiveness, investment knowledge and trust.

COMPENSATION & INCENTIVES

Competitive base salary with a performance-driven variable and commission structure tied to fund inflows, partnership development and results. The role offers meaningful upside for a proven business-development professional who can successfully build AIP's western Canadian presence.
