Original job description

ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation is looking for a Housing Maintenance Worker to help ensure AFN homes, buildings and surrounding areas are safe, well-maintained and cared for.

This position plays an important role in supporting housing quality and member well-being. The successful candidate will respond to housing maintenance needs, complete preventative maintenance and minor repairs, identify issues before they become larger problems, and work with the Facilities Manager, Housing Manager, contractors and community members to address concerns.

This is a hands-on role that combines building maintenance, housing support, customer service and community connection. The successful candidate will take pride in their work, communicate respectfully with members and tenants, and understand the importance of maintaining homes as safe and healthy places for individuals and families.

Externally, we are here to serve the Community, and internally, we are our own Community, comprised of different departments unified by our Vision, Mission, and Values. As a team, through our own roles and departments, the AFN Organization works together to achieve our strategic plan “Our Thinking” and continue to progress and move our community forward.

Job Type: This role is full-time working 35 hours per week onsite.

Key Responsibilities:

Housing Maintenance & Support

Monitor and complete preventative maintenance for AFN rental homes, buildings, equipment, fleet vehicles and grounds.
Respond to maintenance requests and housing-related concerns from members and tenants.
Support home inspection schedule as reflected in Housing Home Rental policy.
Respond to Tenant Repair and Housing Maintenance requests.
Report major damages, safety concerns and required repairs to the Housing Manager & Facilities Manager.
Complete work orders and minor repairs in a timely manner.
Assist with emergency maintenance, cleaning and upkeep requests.
Support members by providing information about maintenance issues and directing concerns to the appropriate department when required.
Maintain appropriate communication and confidentiality when working in members' homes.
Help ensure AFN housing is safe, functional, clean and well-presented.

Building & Grounds Maintenance

Perform basic carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and electrical repairs, within the scope of training and qualifications.
Maintain walkways, driveways, parking areas, entrances and other exterior areas using manual and power equipment.
Complete seasonal maintenance, including snow removal and grounds upkeep.
Assist with moving furniture, equipment, chairs and other items as required.
Secure facilities after operating hours, including locking doors, closing windows and setting alarms.
Assist with pest prevention and control measures, including the safe use of approved insecticides where required and appropriately trained.
Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a safe and organized condition.

Planning & Contractor Coordination

Work collaboratively with the Housing Manager and Facilities Manager to develop and maintain preventative maintenance schedules for AFN homes and buildings.
Assist with coordinating and monitoring work completed by contractors and service providers.
Work with contractors to support safe, efficient and cost-effective completion of repairs and maintenance.
Ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable safety, security, fire and AFN requirements.

Community & Cultural Support

Build positive and respectful working relationships with AFN members, tenants, staff, contractors and community partners.
Relay member feedback and housing concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
Approach interactions with members with kindness, respect, patience and cultural awareness.
Support community activities and events as required, including assisting with burial ceremonies when needed.
Contribute to a positive and welcoming environment for community members accessing AFN services.

Qualifications & Experience

Previous experience in building maintenance, housing maintenance, property maintenance, construction or a related field.
Experience working in residential housing or with tenants/members is considered an asset.
General knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and basic electrical repairs.
Ability to identify maintenance and safety concerns and determine when specialized assistance is required.
Strong practical problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools and maintenance equipment.
Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a team.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and professionally with community members.
Good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing maintenance requests.
Valid Class 5 driver's license
Ability to lift, carry and move equipment and materials and perform physically demanding work.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Knowledge of the Ktunaxa community, culture and values is an asset.
First Aid, WHMIS, OHS or other relevant safety training is an asset.
