Original job description

AKM Law is a Toronto-based immigration law firm providing strategic, practical and client-focused legal services across a broad range of Canadian immigration matters. Our team works on both temporary and permanent residence applications, including work permits, study permits, visitor applications, spousal sponsorships, permanent residence matters, restorations, inadmissibility matters and other complex immigration files.

We are a collaborative and growing team that values strong work, attention to detail, open communication and a supportive working environment. We are looking for someone who enjoys immigration work, takes pride in their files and wants to continue developing their knowledge and experience.

Role Description

AKM Law is seeking a full-time Immigration Caseworker to join our Toronto office.

The Caseworker will work closely with our lawyers and other team members in managing immigration files from initial document collection through preparation and submission. The ideal candidate will already have practical experience working on Canadian immigration applications and will be comfortable managing multiple files, communicating directly with clients and working with immigration forms and online portals.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and managing a range of Canadian immigration applications, including work permits, study permits, visitor visas and records, restorations, spousal sponsorships, permanent residence applications, citizenship applications, PR card renewals and other temporary and permanent residence matters
  • Assisting lawyers with more complex immigration matters, including TRP applications, criminal rehabilitation matters, procedural fairness responses and other files requiring more detailed submissions
  • Managing a caseload of immigration matters under lawyer supervision and taking increasing ownership of files as experience and independence develop
  • Preparing and reviewing immigration forms, application packages and supporting documentation
  • Gathering, reviewing and organizing client documents and identifying missing information, inconsistencies or potential concerns
  • Drafting client correspondence, document requests and supporting materials
  • Working with IRCC and other immigration-related online portals
  • Monitoring deadlines, application progress and outstanding requirements
  • Communicating regularly with clients regarding documentation, next steps and file updates
  • Maintaining accurate and organized electronic files and case management records
  • Working collaboratively with lawyers, caseworkers and administrative staff to ensure files progress efficiently and deadlines are met

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of practical experience working in Canadian immigration law is required.
  • Experience preparing immigration applications, forms and supporting documentation
  • Familiarity with IRCC portals and online immigration filing systems
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify errors, inconsistencies and missing information
  • Comfortable communicating directly with clients and requesting sensitive or detailed information
  • Ability to work independently while knowing when to seek guidance from the responsible lawyer
  • Experience with Clio or similar legal case-management software is an asset
  • Law clerk, paralegal, immigration consultant or related legal education is an asset
  • Additional language skills are an asset

We are particularly interested in candidates who already have a solid foundation in immigration casework but are looking for an opportunity to broaden their experience across different areas of Canadian immigration law.

This is primarily an in-office position in Toronto, with the possibility of some hybrid flexibility once the successful candidate is established in the role, subject to performance, training requirements and the operational needs of the Firm.
