Enterprise Data Governance Lead
Help shape data governance at ACSA
The Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA) is seeking an Enterprise Data Governance Lead to strengthen and expand its existing data management capabilities. Working across the organization, you will develop and mature governance frameworks, policies, standards and stewardship practices that support data quality, compliance and informed decision making.
You'll collaborate with stakeholders to clarify data ownership, enhance accountability, manage data-related risks and promote the consistent and responsible use of information. Working closely with the Enterprise Data Architecture Lead, you will help embed governance standards across systems by sharing ownership of governance documentation and contributing to the automation, reporting, and processes that bring those standards into day-to-day practice, while complementing ACSA's existing expertise and advancing the maturity of its data environment.
Position level
Lead role providing advanced expertise in enterprise data governance, stewardship, data quality, policy development, and risk management, complemented by practical technical capabilities that support governance automation, monitoring, and reporting. Works independently and collaboratively across the organization to establish governance frameworks, standards, and accountability practices that support effective data management and informed decision making. The role is non-managerial, exercising delegated decision making authority within established guidelines, and focuses on advancing approved data governance priorities and initiatives.
What you'll be responsible for
- Support technical delivery of governance: Work with the Enterprise Data Architecture Lead to support the implementation of data pipelines, integrations, scripts, and reports, embedding governance standards into operations within established version control and change management processes.
- Mature the foundation for data governance: Develop, implement, and maintain enterprise data governance policies, standards, and controls. Define data ownership and stewardship models across portfolios and establish standards for classification, retention, access, and lifecycle management.
- Drive data quality excellence: Strengthen enterprise data quality expectations, standardized definitions, and automated data quality monitoring practices to improve reporting reliability, support consistency, and expand governance effectiveness across the organization.
- Lead organization-wide data engagement: Establish and facilitate a cross-departmental Data Committee, with representatives from each department, to guide governance priorities, monitor data quality, and resolve data issues. Build a network of data champions and keep stakeholders informed and involved in governance decisions.
- Strengthen stewardship: Partner with stakeholders across the organization to establish data ownership, clarify roles and responsibilities, and support structured data stewardship practices that promote responsible data use.
- Identify data-related risks: Identify operational, compliance, and reputational risks related to data use, establish escalation practices, and ensure alignment with privacy legislation and organizational requirements.
- Advance data literacy and governance maturity: Provide guidance and support to strengthen understanding of data governance principles and encourage consistent practices across the organization.
- Monitor emerging trends: Stay informed on emerging tools, technologies, and industry trends to strengthen ACSA’s data governance and evidence-based decision making capabilities.
- Represent ACSA professionally: Demonstrate integrity, respect, and accountability in all interactions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring
You bring a strong foundation in enterprise data governance and a passion for helping organizations use data responsibly and effectively. You’re comfortable developing governance frameworks, policies, standards, and stewardship practices while partnering with stakeholders to improve data quality, clarify accountability, manage risk, and support informed decision making. You combine governance expertise with the practical ability to support reporting, monitoring, and automation activities and embed governance standards into day-to-day operations.
- Education:
- Post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate in Information or Data Management, Information Systems, Computer or Data Science or a related field.
- Experience:
- 5+ years of progressive experience in data governance, information governance, data management, or a related field.
- Experience supporting enterprise data initiatives, reporting, governance implementation, or organizational data management activities within a complex organizational environment.
- Considered assets:
- Experience with APIs, automation, scripting, reporting tools, or custom data solutions.
- Experience designing or supporting ETL processes, data pipelines, and system integrations across cloud and on-premises environments.
- Experience with data quality tools, metadata management, data cataloguing, or governance platforms.
- Experience supporting automated data quality monitoring, exception reporting, or governance performance metrics.
- Required skills and abilities:
- Demonstrated expertise in enterprise data governance principles, stewardship models, accountability structures, and governance operating frameworks.
- Proficiency in establishing data ownership frameworks, standardized definitions, classification standards, and lifecycle controls to improve reporting reliability and consistency.
- Ability to assess data-related risk across operational, compliance, privacy, and reputational domains and translate those insights into structured, sustainable governance practices.
- Strong knowledge of privacy legislation and regulatory requirements applicable to data management and protection.
- Strong facilitation, relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build consensus and influence across departments with varying priorities.
- Ability to communicate data, governance, and technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including preparing clear reports, presentations and stakeholder communications.
- Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability in leading organizational change and encouraging adoption of new governance practices.
- Excellent judgment, professionalism and diplomacy when managing sensitive relationships and situations.
Logistics
- This position requires a 40-hour work week.
- This role is eligible for a hybrid work model (ACSA Edmonton office).
- This role reports to the Senior Manager of Enterprise Systems & Data.
Salary: $88,000 – $94,900
