Your Opportunity:
In Collaboration with the Program Manager – ED, the Assistant Head Nurse performs a key leadership role in the organizational and the operational functioning of the Northeast Community Hospital Emergency Department. The Assistant Head Nurse reports to the Program Manager who reports directly to the Site Director. The position is responsible and accountable for providing direction, leadership and organization over the activities of the department. This position is responsible for making key, unit-level decisions and having direct leadership responsibility for establishing and contributing to the achievement of the goals of the department. The AHN is expected to promote quality patient care and team effectiveness through clinical and professional role modeling by using effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills to promote achievement of organizational goals and attention to unit policies and procedures. The Assistant Head Nurse will develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders (inclusive of inter-facility departments and clinics, patients, staff, Clinicians, EMS, Primary Care Physicians, and community members) in order to provide leadership to the department. The successful candidate is accountable for the application of evidenced based knowledge and critical analysis of patient care needs enabling optimal unit coordination, unit flow & patient care continuity.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Current AHN experience in an Emergency Department is mandatory. 3-5 years of emergency/acute experience, within the last 2 years, in an ED setting is mandatory. Charge, Trauma, and Triage experience in an ED setting is mandatory. Ability to actively support front-line patient care needs; including a heavy physical component (transfers/lifts). Expert knowledge of emergency nursing care standards/protocols. Proven critical thinking and judgement required. Ability to communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner required. Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and leadership skills required. Proven ability to facilitate groups and manage change in a positive manner. Capable of working in a fast-paced environment with patients of varying mobility required. Proven reliability/dependability required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those with the following certifications: Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Preference will be given to applicants that possess a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Preference will be given to applicants that have shown initiative in leadership development (i.e. LEADS, Frontline Leadership Certification).

Responsibilities

Requirements
Requires an accredited nursing education program, active or eligible registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta, current BCLS-HCP, current emergency department Assistant Head Nurse experience, and 3–5 years of recent emergency or acute care experience. Mandatory experience includes emergency department charge, trauma, and triage duties, along with strong clinical judgment, communication, leadership, and physical ability to support patient care; a nursing bachelor’s degree and specified advanced certifications are preferred.
