Your Opportunity:
The Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (GNP) is an advanced practice nurse who provides autonomous care for older adults living with frailty, complex comorbidities, and geriatric syndromes in acute care settings. Integrating advanced nursing and medical knowledge, the GNP works to full scope of practice, including conducting Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments (CGAs), developing and implementing treatment plans, prescribing therapies, and coordinating care to optimize health outcomes and support patient and family priorities. The role requires advanced clinical expertise and reasoning to address the complex medical, functional, cognitive, psychosocial, and system factors that influence the health of older adults. Working collaboratively with patients, families, Geriatricians, Clinical Nurse Specialists, nursing teams, and interprofessional partners, the GNP provides evidence-informed, person-centred consultation and leadership across the continuum of care. As a clinician, consultant, educator, and leader, the GNP advances best practices in geriatrics, supports quality improvement initiatives, and contributes to the development of healthcare providers’ knowledge and capacity in caring for older adults. In collaboration with site geriatricians, the primary responsibility of the GNP is to provide CGAs for patients referred to the Acute Care Geriatric Consultation Service and to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care. The GNP may also provide consultation and follow-up within inpatient units, emergency departments, and other acute care sites across Calgary Corridor programs as appropriate. Opportunities exist to participate in program development, quality improvement, research, and initiatives that enhance geriatric care in the Calgary Corridor. This position is primarily based at South Health Campus, with coverage at PLC as operationally required.

As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. You will be responsible for integrating clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage and meet the health needs of patients. Additionally, you will utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to increase care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform and influence healthcare systems. Required Qualifications:
Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program, with a minimum of a Master's degree. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar, including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS-HCP) certification. Two years of experience in a geriatric focused area (e.g., specialized geriatrics, AGU, or equivalent), or acute care area with sufficient expertise supporting geriatric patient population. Consideration will be given to those who completed a recent NP practicum in geriatrics. Two years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner. Consideration will be given to those who completed a recent NP practicum in acute care. Proven leadership skills and experience in advocating for elder-friendly care and policies. Strong ability to provide expert advice and consultation to healthcare teams and leadership. Exceptional communication skills, capable of effectively engaging with patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Deep commitment to providing compassionate, patient and family-focused geriatric care. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current CNA certification in Gerontology. Demonstrated pattern of professional development. Experience translating research evidence into practice through the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical guidelines, standards, and protocols.
