Your Opportunity:
The Orthoptist at the RGH Ophthalmology (Eye) Clinic is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and non-surgical management of binocular vision and ocular motility disorders. Working collaboratively with ophthalmologists and the interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Orthoptist performs specialized clinical assessments and diagnostic testing to support the evaluation and management of strabismus and related conditions. The Orthoptist provides advanced clinical expertise and exercises a high degree of autonomy in managing complex binocular vision and ocular motility disorders. The role requires strong clinical knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to identify and respond appropriately to patient safety concerns. The Orthoptist demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and clinical excellence while promoting quality patient care, efficient clinic operations, and effective interdisciplinary collaboration. The role delivers patient- and family-centered care, providing education on diagnoses, treatment options, management plans, and follow-up requirements. The Orthoptist collaborates with ophthalmic personnel, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in specialty clinics and provides mentorship to learners. The role also supports the Urgent Care Clinic by performing ophthalmic workups and assessing patients presenting with acute binocular vision and ocular motility disorders. In addition, the Orthoptist contributes to workflow optimization and quality improvement initiatives.
Description:
As an Orthoptist, you will perform advanced-level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. You will participate in research studies, educational rounds and in-services, and maintain good medical knowledge of ocular anatomy, pharmacology, diseases, and management, including current available treatments and clinical trials.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an orthoptic course from an accredited institution. Active membership with the Canadian Orthoptic Council (COC).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Minimum of three years of experience in a pediatric and/or adult strabismus clinic; hospital experience preferred. Advanced knowledge of binocular vision, ocular motility disorders, strabismus, amblyopia, and neuro-ophthalmic conditions. Ability to perform specialized orthoptic assessments and diagnostic testing including Hess screen testing, synoptophore assessments, and refractions. Ability to recognize, assess, and respond to complex or high-risk patient presentations with minimal supervision. Demonstrated strong communication, critical thinking, clinical judgment, and decision-making skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and clinical information systems. Demonstrated alignment with AHS values: compassion, accountability, respect, excellence, and safety. Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, standing, walking, and prolonged sitting.
Preferred Qualifications:
International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) Certification (e.g. COT, COMT). Proficiency in ophthalmic technical skills, including applanation tonometry, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and ophthalmic photography. Experience with adult strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology clinics. Experience using Connect Care. Experience with interdisciplinary and specialty clinics. Experience supporting clinical education, teaching, or mentorship initiatives.
