Original job description
Help bring new plays to life across Alberta!
Alberta Playwrights’ Network (APN) is seeking a creative, organized, and community-minded Program and Operations Coordinator.
This is an opportunity to bring your artistic and organizational skills into a salaried role that combines creative collaboration with hands-on arts administration. Working across programs, membership services, and organizational development, you’ll help connect playwrights with opportunities and contribute to an exciting new chapter of a province-wide arts organization.
This position is particularly well-suited to theatre artists, educators, emerging arts leaders, or professionals looking to deepen their organizational experience while nurturing their own artistic or outside practices.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to Executive Director Louise Casemore, the Program and Operations Coordinator plays an important part in keeping APN’s programs, services, and day-to-day operations running smoothly. You’ll work across a broad range of responsibilities, from supporting programs (including dramaturgy, workshops, and competitions) to managing our membership system, assisting with funding applications, and helping develop new strategies to serve playwrights throughout Alberta.
Working closely with a small but passionate inter-provincial team, you’ll have opportunities to contribute ideas, take initiative, build new skills, and learn how a busy arts service organization operates.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Membership Management
- Oversee APN’s membership services, including maintenance of the membership database, tracking renewals, and responding to member inquiries.
- Help strengthen relationships with playwrights by providing a welcoming, community-connected place for them to reach out with questions or concerns.
Program Coordination and Delivery
- Support APN programs, including processing competition submissions, sourcing jurors/facilitators/instructors, preparing invoices, assistance with casting for workshops/readings.
- Assist with the coordination of play readings, community gatherings, and script workshops around the province.
- Contribute to program development and help identify strategies to better serve members and the broader provincial arts ecology.
Administrative and Organizational Support
- Assist with administrative processes, including Canadian Actors’ Equity Association (CAEA) contracting, grant writing, fundraising initiatives, and casino-related activities.
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the APN office, including monitoring supplies, space bookings, maintaining records, filing documents, and overseeing data backups.
- Help keep APN’s information systems organized, responsive, and effective.
Collaboration and Growth
- Work collaboratively to deliver programs and advance organizational priorities.
- Bring curiosity, initiative, and fresh perspectives to the ongoing development of APN’s services and activities.
- Identify opportunities and potential partners related to new play development, community-building, and arts advocacy.
POSITION DETAILS AND COMPENSATION
- Position: Program and Operations Coordinator (Permanent)
- Location: Calgary, Alberta, working on-site at the APN office with the option for some hybrid/remote activity
- Hours: 20-25 hours per week, on an employee-determined weekly schedule
- Salary: $25,000 annually, paid biweekly
- Benefits: Access to health spending account / benefits plan (following an initial probationary period)
- Vacation: Two weeks of vacation earned annually, plus an office closure over the December holiday period
- Professional development: Dedicated budget support for courses, training, and other professional development opportunities
- Start date: January 4th, 2027, with opportunity to begin paid onboarding in December if available
WHO YOU ARE
You’re a collaborative, resourceful, and results-driven professional who understands the value of supporting artists and the arts as a whole. You enjoy building sustainable ways of working, and balancing the details of administration with the bigger picture of artistic impact.
You bring:
- Experience: A minimum 3 years of experience in arts administration. A related degree or certificate in Arts or Culture Management is an asset in addition to work experience, but not required.
- Interest: A passion for play development or theatre making, community building, and supporting Alberta’s arts ecology. *Dramaturgs and individuals with experience in directing are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Grant writing skills: Demonstrated efficiency in grant writing and familiarity with municipal, provincial, and federal arts funding streams.
- Organizational strengths: The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, maintain strong attention to detail, and keep administrative processes on track.
- Flexibility and initiative: Comfort working independently, taking ownership of tasks, and collaborating with colleagues in a remote environment. This includes planning taskflow based on capacity and program demand, generating timesheets to report on hours, and use of task management systems.
- Care: An enthusiastic willingness to be part of an organization prioritizing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within our artistic processes, hiring, and day-to-day work.
