What we do

The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) is an independent, quasi-judicial agency of the province of Alberta. As Alberta’s independent utilities regulator, the AUC is responsible for ensuring that utility services are delivered in a manner that is fair, responsible and in the public interest.

The AUC regulates investor-owned natural gas, electric and water utilities, as well as certain municipally owned electric utilities, to ensure customers receive safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates. It also oversees the construction, operation and decommissioning of electric facilities and provides regulatory oversight of Alberta’s wholesale electricity market and retail gas and electricity markets.

Through this work, the AUC supports safe, reliable and affordable utility service, while maintaining independent, evidence-based decision-making and public confidence in Alberta’s regulatory framework.

The ideal candidate

Reporting to the executive director of external affairs and communications, the communications analyst – intermediate provides strategic communications support across a broad range of corporate initiatives. The successful candidate is a skilled communicator and project coordinator who can manage competing priorities, develop clear and compelling communications products, and build strong relationships across the organization.

This position supports internal and external communications, media relations, stakeholder engagement, digital communications, executive communications, government relations activities, and corporate initiatives. The ideal candidate can translate complex information into clear, audience-focused communications while managing multiple priorities and projects.

Key responsibilities

Communication skills

Develop and implement communications plans, strategies and products that support organizational priorities and business objectives.
Write, edit and coordinate a variety of communications materials, including news releases, web content, newsletters, speeches, presentations, briefing materials, key messages, reports and internal communications.
Provide communications advice and support to executives and subject matter experts.
Support media relations activities, including drafting media responses, monitoring media coverage and maintaining positive relationships with journalists and stakeholders.
Assist with stakeholder engagement and consultation initiatives.
Plan and coordinate internal events, including town halls, employee engagement activities, recognition events and others as required.
Manage and maintain digital communication channels, including the AUC website, intranet, email communications and social media platforms (LinkedIn and YouTube).
Ensure all communications products align with organizational standards, branding guidelines, Canadian Press style requirements and plain-language principles.
Monitor emerging issues and identify potential communications risks and opportunities.

Project management and teamwork skills

Lead and support cross-functional projects by developing project plans, coordinating resources, tracking milestones and managing deliverables.
Serve as project lead or communications representative on corporate initiatives and special projects.
Coordinate website and digital modernization projects, including stakeholder consultation, requirements gathering, vendor coordination, testing and implementation activities.
Facilitate meetings, workshops and engagement sessions, documenting decisions, action items and project outcomes.
Build collaborative working relationships across the organization and with external stakeholders to achieve project objectives.
Support government relations activities by monitoring legislative and policy developments, preparing briefing materials and providing communications support for interactions with government and external stakeholders.
Exercise sound judgment, discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive or confidential information.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support a collaborative, service-oriented team environment.

Qualifications

As the ideal candidate you will possess:

Diploma or undergraduate degree in communications, public relations, journalism, political science, public administration or a related discipline.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public affairs, stakeholder engagement or a related field.
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing communications plans and strategies for internal and external audiences.
Demonstrated project management experience leading communications, digital or organizational initiatives from planning through implementation while coordinating multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills, with the ability to tailor content for a variety of audiences and communication channels.
Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective relationships across all levels of an organization.
Proven ability to translate complex technical, legal or regulatory information into clear, concise and audience-focused communications.
Experience working with senior leaders and subject matter experts to develop strategic communications, briefing materials and presentations.
Knowledge of media relations principles, including media monitoring, issue identification and responding to media inquiries.
Experience planning, coordinating and executing corporate events.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
Experience gathering business requirements, tracking project decisions, facilitating meetings and monitoring project deliverables.
Knowledge of digital communications, including website content management, analytics and content governance.
Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and website content management systems (WordPress).
Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.

The following are considered an asset

Experience working in a regulatory, utility, government or public sector environment.
Experience supporting government relations, public affairs, issues management or legislative monitoring.
Experience managing website redevelopment, digital transformation or organizational change projects.
Project management training, certification (CAPM, PMP or equivalent) or demonstrated experience leading cross-functional projects.
Familiarity with Alberta's government structure, policy-making processes and utility sector issues.
Knowledge of the Alberta electric and natural gas sectors and the regulatory environment.
