Original job description

Gremlin Tamer Wanted: You know what it takes to make an eCommerce website work properly, from the storefront customers see to the backend systems they don’t. You’re comfortable digging into code, tracking down stubborn bugs, and figuring out why a test that worked yesterday has decided to ruin everyone’s morning. You build automated testing frameworks that are reliable, easy to maintain, and ready to grow with the business. And you’re always looking for ways to make the whole thing work better.

If that sounds like your kind of work, we’ve got a friendly team, plenty of technical challenges, and a meaningful mission we’d love you to be part of. Let’s chat!

AlgaeCal is on the lookout for a Senior QA Developer to bring their skills to our lively QA team and help transform lives, one stable release at a time.

Small print here ⇒ We’re an eCommerce company. So, we want you to have eCommerce experience. Lots of it. You’ll be helping us improve the quality, stability, and reliability of our React-based storefront and internal middleware. So if automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and digital marketing technology don’t light at least a small fire in your belly, you probably shouldn’t read any further.

Still here? Okay then…

This job might be for you if you’ve got…

3+ years of QA development experience. You’ve built, maintained, and improved automated testing strategies, and you can tell us what worked, what didn’t, and what you changed along the way.
Strong JavaScript and TypeScript skills. You’re comfortable getting into the code, writing reliable automated tests, and coming back six months later without wondering what on earth you were thinking.
Hands-on experience with Cypress, Playwright, or similar testing frameworks. You know how to investigate unreliable tests, improve coverage, and keep a growing test suite running smoothly.
The ability to build testing frameworks that can grow with the business. You think about how everything fits together, how easy it is to maintain, and whether it’ll still do the job as things get more complex. You’ll put that thinking to work across our Shopify Hydrogen storefront and backend middleware.
Experience integrating automated tests into cloud-based CI/CD pipelines. You know how to get the right checks running at the right time, so developers get useful feedback quickly and releases move forward with fewer headaches.
A good handle on quality reporting. Test coverage, execution times, pipeline stability, recurring failures, and bugs reaching production. You can use those numbers to explain how things are going and where we need to improve.
Experience testing APIs and investigating performance. API contract testing, load testing, and browser developer tools should be familiar territory. When something slows down or stops behaving, you know where to start looking.
A few extra tools in your kit. Experience with Python, PHP, Figma, Storybook, or Jest would earn you a few bonus points. You don’t need the full set, so tell us what you’ve worked with.

Now, time to be honest: is this really you?

If you’re nodding your head and feeling that flutter of excitement, then we can’t wait to meet you.

Other Qualities You’ll Need

At AlgaeCal, we’re going to insist that you have these 3 qualities:

You’re humble - you put the team and others’ needs ahead of your own
You’re hungry to learn more
You’re people smart - in the sense that you’re a great teammate

The truth is, if you don’t have these qualities, you won’t last long at AlgaeCal. So if you’re missing one of them, be honest. Save yourself a lot of headaches and skip to a job posting that is a better fit for you.

What Will You Earn?

The salary for this position is $80,000 to $100,000, depending on your experience. If your salary expectations differ from this range, please let us know!

You’ll also enjoy the following benefits:

A generous healthcare package
Monthly team events and activities
Flexible Stat Holidays with the option to bank days for later use
Weekly team lunches
Casual dress code
Incredible dog-friendly office

And above all, you’ll join a team that you’ll never want to leave. Culture is everything to us. Yes, we work extremely hard to change as many people’s lives as possible. But we know how to have fun and reward ourselves too.

How To Apply

So, do you have what it takes to become the next member of team AlgaeCal?

Job opportunities like this don’t come along often, and we’ve got a lot to offer our successful applicant. So, to make sure our future Senior QA Developer is the real-deal, will be a great fit, and will thrive at AlgaeCal, we ask a little more than your run-of-the-mill job application:

If this sounds like a position for you, please respond to this advertisement with your resume and cover letter. Please, read carefully:

Write a cover letter addressing:

Why are you the best Senior QA Developer for this role? Give quantifiable examples of related achievements, especially around automation frameworks, CI/CD testing, defect reduction, flaky test reduction, QA metrics, or mentoring other QA developers.

What's the toughest challenge you’ve ever overcome in your life? How did you overcome it?

What do you do for fun?

Explain what you’re doing now for a job:

If you don’t have one, explain why.

If you have one, explain why you’re looking elsewhere.
