Senior Java Developer

We are seeking Intermediate to Senior Java Developers to join a highly technical front-office development team supporting Financial Markets activities.

This is a hands-on development role for engineers who can design, build and implement scalable applications and systems. The team values developers who understand how systems work end to end, participate in design discussions and take ownership of implementing practical solutions.

The team operates with a startup-style culture within a major financial institution. Candidates from smaller organizations or startups are particularly welcome. Developers from larger enterprises will also be considered if they demonstrate substantial hands-on technical ownership.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Java applications supporting Financial Markets trading activities.
• Design and build scalable, robust and maintainable solutions.
• Participate in system design discussions and implement technical solutions.
• Support applications across multiple asset classes and business functions, including:
• e-Trading, Equity, FX and Fixed Income
• Stock Lending
• Structured Products Pricing and Risk
• CVA, XVA and PFE
• Mortgage Derivatives
• Equity Swaps and Delta One
• Regulatory Reporting and Operations
• Understand existing applications, processes and development practices.
• Prepare technical documentation supporting deployment and application support.
• Contribute to quantitative development for Front Office and Market Risk, depending on qualifications.
• Investigate problems and develop solutions with incomplete or evolving requirements.
• Collaborate with quantitative specialists and other developers.
• Identify opportunities to improve existing applications and processes.

Required Technical Skills and Experience

• Strong hands-on core Java development experience.
• Demonstrated ability to construct and implement applications and systems.
• Understanding of software design and scalable application development.
• Experience participating in system design discussions.
• Strong debugging, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Experience with Linux environments and some Windows exposure.
• Knowledge of HTML, CSS, some JavaScript and Bash Shell.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• A genuinely hands-on Java developer who writes code regularly.
• Experience building scalable applications and understanding how system components work together.
• Ability to participate in design discussions and personally implement solutions.
• Experience in a startup or smaller organization with meaningful technical ownership, or similar initiative demonstrated in a larger enterprise.
• Comfortable working independently with limited requirements.
• Genuine interest in Financial Markets and learning the underlying business.
• Interest in developing long-term expertise within the team.
• Financial Markets experience is helpful but not mandatory. Approximately five years of experience in a Canadian work context is preferred. Candidates with less experience may be considered if they come from a startup environment with strong mentorship and demonstrate the necessary technical capability.

Java Development Environment

The current codebase primarily uses Java 24/25, with Java 8 used for specific Excel add-in applications. Experience with a particular Java version is not a hard screening requirement; strong core Java fundamentals and adaptability are more important.

The team is not focused on low-latency or high-frequency trading systems, although application responsiveness to user requests is important.
