Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.
Could you be the full-time Onboard Installation Technician in Whitby, ON, we’re looking for?
Your future role
Take on a new challenge and apply your pneumatic/piping expertise in a cutting-edge field. You’ll work alongside skilled and collaborative teammates.
You'll play a key role in ensuring and performing the installation, wiring test, and resolution of electrical faults in both high and low-voltage systems, contributing to the transformation of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas (GTHA) transit system. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business (installation supervisors, project site managers, and design teams), ensure compliance with safety standards, and provide proactive suggestions for process improvements, and much more.
You’ll specifically take care of maintaining updated electrical schematics and troubleshooting electrical faults, but also contribute to the development of test plans to validate system modifications.
We’ll look to you for:
- Strict adherence to Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) procedures, policies, railway safety rules, and applicable electrical regulations.
- Confirming installation readiness, including manpower, tools/equipment, materials, and methods, and ensuring installation activities are performed without deviations.
- Performing onboard electrical installation, modification, repair, and integration activities in accordance with approved design documentation and work instructions.
- Installing, replacing, and repairing electrical wiring, cables, connectors, control systems, circuit boards, and other onboard electrical components.
- Reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, installation drawings, and technical documentation.
- Performing precise wiring, cable routing, crimping, shielding, connector assembly, termination, and torque-tightening activities.
- Conducting electrical inspections and post-installation testing, including continuity, insulation resistance/dielectric, pin-to-pin, voltage, current, and resistance measurements as applicable.
- Using electrical diagnostic and testing equipment, including multimeters, continuity testers, Megger devices, and automated test equipment where applicable.
- Diagnosing and resolving electrical faults in low- and high-voltage systems, including onboard control systems and associated components.
- Ensuring compliance with design documentation, installation methods, quality requirements, and Installation Supervisor instructions.
- Performing self-checks and supporting peer reviews to ensure electrical installations meet defined quality and workmanship requirements.
- Maintaining accurate records of work performed, test results, measurements, torque values, wiring modifications, and component configurations.
- Identifying and reporting risks, deviations, non-conformities, or technical issues that could impact safety, quality, installation performance, or schedule.
- Using APSYS (Alstom Performance System) tools and templates to support risk management, continuous improvement, and installation best practices.
All about you
We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:
- Diploma or Certificate in Electrical Technology, Industrial Electrician, or a related field, or a Technical High-School Diploma.
- Previous experience in a railway maintenance facility, rolling stock assembly, transit environment, or similar industrial setting is strongly preferred.
- Experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Experience performing electrical wiring, cable routing, connector assembly, termination, and troubleshooting activities.
- Experience with electrical Special Processes such as crimping, shielding, and torque tightening.
- Experience performing wire-integrity testing, including continuity and insulation resistance/dielectric testing, using pin-to-pin methods and Megger equipment.
- Experience using electrical diagnostic and testing equipment such as multimeters, continuity testers, and other electrical measurement devices.
- Understanding of railway maintenance facilities, rolling stock assembly, or similar heavy-industrial environments.
- Knowledge of Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) requirements, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), PPE, and electrical safety practices.
- Ontario 309A Construction and Maintenance Electrician or 422A Industrial Electrician certification is desirable.
- Ability to safely and effectively use electrical installation tools, including crimpers, wire strippers, drills, and calibrated torque tools.
- Ability to identify electrical and installation hazards and proactively implement or escalate corrective actions.
- Ability to adapt to changing schedules, technical requirements, and onboard/workshop working conditions.
- Ability to work collaboratively with technicians, Installation Supervisors, Installation Engineers, and other multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to support other technicians, share technical knowledge, and contribute to continuous improvement.
