Original job description

YOUR PROJECT IS TO manage TIME, COST, RESOURCES AND quality.

The Opportunity

Like Dilbert, do you find yourself sitting in your cubicle thinking, “I need to think outside the box”? Do you love having overall responsibility for the successful initiation, planning, developing, execution, monitoring, controlling and closure of a project? If so, this may just be the role you were meant for.

You’re a seasoned construction or facilities Project Manager who knows how to deliver capital projects safely, on budget, and to specification. You bring hands-on experience managing contractors, coordinating with architects and engineers, navigating permitting, and resolving site issues quickly and professionally.

You know how to get work done - and motivate the trades, consultants, and internal teams who help you do it. When it comes to team leadership, you’re the whole package: strong communicator, confident decision-maker, and steady presence on and off the construction site.

As a Project Manager, you will lead the end-to-end delivery of construction, renovation, and facility upgrade projects - shaping business cases, developing scopes, managing resources, and ensuring safety, quality, and schedule alignment from concept to commissioning.

The Team You’ve Been Looking For

AMA is more than a workplace; it’s a family. Together, we help protect the things that matter most to our more than one-million members, from roadside safety and retail savings to food security and childhood well-being. And with operations spanning automotive, registries, travel, insurance and more, the opportunities to grow with us are almost limitless!

Building on a century of proud service in Alberta communities, we’re passionate about making a meaningful difference in the places where we live and work. And that all begins with our people. As part of the AMA team, you’ll enjoy:

Competitive salary and flexible benefits
Employer-paid retirement savings program
Employee-exclusive discounts on travel, insurance, memberships and more
Free travel medical insurance for you and your immediate family
Ongoing professional development
Paid vacation and personal days, including a Volunteer Day and Me Day
Flexible work models that make sense for your lifestyle

For us, curiosity fuels innovation. We value people who are eager to explore new ideas and put emerging technologies into practice. Experience with AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot and similar platforms is a real plus, especially when it’s used to work smarter, increase efficiency and find better ways to get things done.

Who You Are

You're a master multi-tasker who can juggle a variety of projects with ease - you have no problem getting things done.
You’re a spirited team leader who knows how to motivate your team to get results.
You're a flexible and responsive team player who is comfortable working with all levels in an organization.
You love to share thoughts and ideas – after all, two heads are always better than one.
You’re a natural when it comes to finding simple solutions to complicated problems and explaining them to others.
You’re both a right-brain and a left-brain thinker and have a good balance between your innovative side and quantitative analytical abilities.
You’ve successfully managed construction, renovation, or capital projects, including working with architects, engineers, contractors, and trades.
You’re comfortable on construction sites, conducting walkthroughs, reviewing progress, and addressing field issues in real time.
Safety matters to you - you understand OHS requirements, site controls, hazard assessments, and contractor safety coordination.
You read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and contracts with confidence.

How You’ll Make an Impact

Prepare project plans, project schedules, risk mitigation and status reporting within project management methodologies.
Analyze project proposals to determine time frame, funding limitations and appropriate process.
Work with Business Leaders and stakeholders to deliver complex multi-stream projects.
Work collaboratively across project/delivery teams and external parties.
Participate in cross-functional teams during design, proposal development, implementation and review.
Conduct analysis to identify improvement opportunities.
Escalate issues early to maintain schedule and scope.
Increase overall effectiveness, efficiency and profitability through operational improvements.
Lead construction project planning, including site assessments, feasibility evaluation, scope definition, and design coordination.
Manage contractors, consultants, trades, vendors, and inspectors, ensuring all work follows drawings, specifications, and building codes.
Track and control construction budgets, cash flow, contingencies, procurement, and change orders.
Conduct routine site visits, progress reviews, deficiency inspections, and status reporting.
Drive resolution of field issues, schedule risks, material delays, and interdependencies across multiple workstreams.
Ensure projects meet AMA construction standards and quality expectations from kickoff to occupancy.

What You Bring to the Table

Experience in interior design or retail design environments considered an asset.
Ability to collaborate with designers on space planning, finishes, millwork, and customer experience–driven layouts.
Post-secondary education in a related field.
8+ years of experience in project management.
PMP or construction-related designation considered an asset.
Exceptional communication with senior stakeholders.
Strength in planning, analysis, problem-solving, delivery, and communication.
Understanding of agile/lean still applicable if adapted to construction (optional).
You have at least 5 years leading construction, renovation, capital improvement, or facility development projects.
Strong knowledge of construction contracts (stipulated sum, designbuild, CM, costplus).
Experience with construction tendering, RFP/RFQ processes, construction administration, and progress payment validation.
Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil drawings.
Experience with construction project controls: cost tracking, earned value, scheduling, risk assessments, change management.
Familiarity with building codes, OHS requirements, inspections, and quality assurance.

Belonging Matters Here
