Original job description

TECH life AT AMA.

The Opportunity

You're a geek - and proud of it. You love building the systems that power great digital experiences. Whether it's developing APIs, integrating applications, creating scalable backend services, or helping shape technical solutions, you're always looking for smarter, more reliable ways to solve problems. We could use a passionate techy like you! As a Developer on our Information Services team, you'll design, build, test, and support backend solutions that help AMA deliver exceptional experiences for members and employees. You'll help shape technical solutions and turn business needs into secure, maintainable, and scalable software that delivers real value. At the heart of how we work is AI Spec-Driven Development, a disciplined approach where well-defined specifications guide AI Coding Agents in producing secure, maintainable, and testable software at speed. You won't just write code, you'll help define the specifications, requirements, and technical direction that enable AI to do it well, making strong engineering judgment, systems thinking, and spec quality some of your most valuable skills. Just as importantly, you'll bring a collaborative mindset and strong interpersonal skills that contribute to our positive, supportive, and high-performing team culture. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on meaningful solutions, help shape the future of software development at AMA, and grow your career in a creative environment with excellent benefits.

The Team You’ve Been Looking For
AMA is more than a workplace; it’s a family. Together, we help protect the things that matter most to our more than one-million members - everything from roadside safety to retail savings, food security to childhood well-being. And with operations that span automotive, registries, travel, insurance and more, the opportunities to grow with us are almost limitless!

Building on a century of proud service in Alberta communities, we’re passionate about making a meaningful difference in the places where we live and work. And that all begins with our people. As part of the AMA team, you’ll enjoy:

Competitive salary and flexible benefits
Employer-paid retirement savings program
Employee-exclusive discounts on travel, insurance, memberships, and more
Free travel medical insurance for you and your immediate family
Ongoing professional development
Paid vacation and personal days, including a Volunteer Day and Me Day
Flexible work models that make sense for your lifestyle

For us, curiosity fuels innovation. We value people who are eager to explore new ideas and who are comfortable putting emerging technologies into practice. We see experience with AI‑powered tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and similar platforms as a real plus - especially when it’s used to work smarter, increase efficiency, and find better ways to get things done.

Who You Are

You tackle every project with anticipation and excitement - no matter how big or how small.
You ‘get’ what it means to be part of the team and enjoy working in a collaborative, open-office environment.
You build strong working relationships, communicate with empathy and respect, and contribute to a team culture where people feel supported, heard, and able to do their best work.
The words “that will do” aren’t in your vocabulary. You always strive to find the best, most innovative solution.
You’re curious about the business behind the technology and look for ways IT solutions can support business priorities, improve processes, and create value for members, employees, and partners.
You don’t sit around waiting to be told what to do. You know what needs to be done and you do it.
You love rolling up your sleeves and digging into the details.
You handle even the tightest deadlines with a cool head and clear vision.

How You’ll Make an Impact

Reporting to the Agile Team Lead, Software Development, you’ll be working with web applications, with a strong focus on cloud-native, serverless apps.
Work in a dynamic Agile environment following Scrum and SAFe frameworks
Focus on applying security best-practices throughout the entire process of the development lifecycle
Coordinate with Product Owners, other developers, and business users through the project life cycle to gather and understand requirements, determine best solutions, test solutions, and demonstrate functionality to end users.
Collaborate with product and technical stakeholders to create clear development specifications and use AI Coding Agents responsibly to accelerate implementation, validation, and refinement of software solutions.
Contribute positively to team discussions, code reviews, planning sessions, and day-to-day collaboration by communicating clearly, listening actively, and working respectfully with others.
Help coach and mentor fellow developers on the team with a focus on peer reviews and pair programming
Follow modern application architecture guidelines and design principles such as separation of concerns, single responsibility, and least knowledge.
Contribute to and facilitate the alignment/adoption of common architecture standards across the association
Deploy code through an established automated deployment framework. Enhance deployment framework as needs arise.
Create user-centric applications by considering customer feedback, technical constraints, opportunities, and usability findings.
Partner with business and product stakeholders to understand the “why” behind requirements and ensure technical solutions are aligned with business goals, operational needs, and customer value.
Enforce test-driven development (TDD) and continuous integration.
Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation backed by automated monitoring and an incident management platform.

What You Bring to the Table

You have a university degree or technical school diploma in a related technical field such as Information Technology or Computer Science. Have a degree in something else? Tell us about it and how you can use it in this role.
You have at least 5 years of development experience.
You have excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work well with diverse teammates, stakeholders, and business partners in a respectful, constructive, and collaborative way.
You bring a business-oriented mindset and understand that strong IT delivery means supporting organizational priorities, solving real business problems, and balancing technical excellence with practical outcomes.
You have at least 3 years of experience in systems integration using Application Programming Interface (API) management and design.
Security forward thinking, and a grasp of common security frameworks like NIST
Deep knowledge of authentication and authorization fundamentals and frameworks, specifically OAuth 2.0/2.1, and OIDC
You have experience in web application security.
Certification of AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associated is a great asset
You have experience with data security at rest and transit.
You have a shift-left on security mindset with experience in the OWASP Security Knowledge Framework.
You have experience with observability.
You have experience with automated integration and unit testing
You have experience in DevOps and CI/CD pipelines
You have experience, or a strong interest, in AI-assisted software development, including working from clear specifications, reviewing AI-generated code, and applying engineering judgment to ensure quality, security, and maintainability.
You have experience with the following technologies:
C#, .NET Core
AWS experience with Lambda, Fargate, and CloudFormation
JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js
ReactJS, Redux
NoSQL and RDBMS technologies
Git (Azure DevOps, GitHub)
You’ll get bonus points if you have:
Open-source contributions
AWS experience with CDK, SQS, EventBridge, and S3 Buckets.
You’re a pro at developing applications/services using a combination of REST, NoSQL and RDBMS technologies.
Experience with microservices.
Some knowledge of Python.
Familiarity with AI Coding Agents, prompt-driven development workflows, or specification-first software delivery practices.

Belonging Matters Here
AMA is committed to providing an inclusive, respectful, and accessible environment. If you require an accommodation at any time during our recruitment process, please contact recruitment@ama.ab.ca. We’ll work with you feel supported throughout your journey with us.
