Original job description

Amazon MQ is a managed AWS service for Apache ActiveMQ and RabbitMQ that streamlines setup, operation, and management of message brokers on AWS. Every day we make it easier for developers to build applications that use the rich features and power of open-source message brokers. We partner with the maintainers of the RabbitMQ and Apache ActiveMQ open source projects to continually evolve and improve the projects with new features and optimizations.

Key job responsibilities
As a Software Development Engineer with Amazon MQ, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and deploying distributed open-source message broker systems and large-scale solutions for our world-wide customer base. In this, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional peers and open source project maintainers to influence our overall strategy and define the team's roadmap. You will drive the system architecture, spearhead best practices that enable a quality product, and help coach and develop junior engineers. A successful candidate will have an established background in engineering large scale software systems, a strong technical ability, great communication skills, and a motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced environment.

A day in the life
Your day might begin with a design discussion where you and your teammates whiteboard a new feature, weighing tradeoffs around system dependencies and long-term extensibility. After that, you dive into coding, writing tests, and reviewing pull requests from peers. You regularly connect with product and engineering partners to align on priorities, and you may spend part of your afternoon investigating an operational metric that looks off, tracing it to its root cause and proposing a fix. Throughout it all, you are coaching newer engineers and keeping your own skills sharp.

About the team
Inclusive Team Culture:
At AWS, we embrace our differences. We are committed to furthering our culture of inclusion. We have ten employee-led affinity groups, reaching 40,000 employees in over 190 chapters globally. We have innovative benefit offerings, and host annual and ongoing learning experiences, including our Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon (gender diversity) conferences. Amazon's culture of inclusion is reinforced within our 14 Leadership Principles, which remind team members to seek diverse perspectives, learn and be curious, and earn trust.

Mentorship & Career Growth:
Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we're building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior members enjoy one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.
Basic Qualifications: - 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language Preferred Qualifications: - 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.

Our inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers. Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, basic life & AD&D insurance), Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), Deferred Profit Sharing Plan (DPSP), paid time off, and other resources to improve health and well-being. We thank all applicants for their interest, however only those interviewed will be advised as to hiring status.
