Original job description
The Project Accountant will play a key role in supporting financial and management reporting in a project-based environment. This role involves handling day-to-day project-based financial analysis and demands an in-depth understanding of the ERP system and its interdependencies between modules. The position requires strong integration with project teams in order to ensure proper unit level cost analysis and integrity of project results. The role is also responsible for strong financial and internal controls at the project level and maintains constant communication with the Divisional Finance lead on project financial reporting and month-end close. This position is well-suited to a candidate with a combination of construction industry and corporate financial experience.
Responsibilities
- Own the preparation of the reporting requirements for an assigned portfolio of infrastructure projects from contract award to final completion, covering revenue, cost, margin, and backlog.
- Partner with Project Controls to review and assess the monthly project forecast, including estimated costs at completion, forecast revenue and cash flows, testing the assumptions on quantities, production rates, and remaining risk.
- Provide project-level analysis to the Divisional Finance lead to support financial statement estimates.
- Deliver the project accounting components of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including accruals, job cost reconciliations, and balance sheet support.
- Contribute to the annual budget and periodic reforecasts, and explain variances between actual, forecast, and budgeted results to the Divisional Finance lead.
- Verify change orders, extra work, and claims from notice through resolution so that approved and pending amounts are reflected appropriately in revenue and forecasts.
- Reconcile costs and billings by contract item, highlighting discrepancies and missed billings.
- Review the allocation of self-performed labour, equipment, and material costs to projects for accuracy and consistency.
- Turn project financials into clear, timely reporting for project managers, operations leaders, and executives, proactively flagging margin fade, cost overruns, and cash risk.
- Maintain accurate project financial data in Oracle, including project setup, budgets, and contract structure, and work with operations and systems teams to improve data quality.
- Apply internal controls over project revenue, cost, and billing, and prepare supporting schedules for year-end and partner reporting, as required.
- Identify opportunities to standardize and streamline project accounting processes.
Qualifications
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- CPA designation, completed or in progress, is considered an asset.
- Minimum 4 years of project accounting experience, preferably with a contractor in heavy civil, infrastructure, or other construction sectors.
- Working knowledge of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and contract cost forecasting.
- Hands-on experience with month-end and year-end close, including accruals, reconciliations, and management reporting.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, including building financial tools.
- Compelling Excel skills, including lookup functions, pivot tables, and working with large data sets; exposure to Power BI or similar reporting tools is an asset.
- Proficiency with Oracle or another large ERP environment is considered an asset.
- Effective communication skills and strong team player
- Highly organized and dependable under tight deadlines, with the ability to manage several projects and priorities at once.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
