The Quality Control Coordinator is responsible for supporting the implementation and execution of project specific Quality Management Plans and quality control requirements on heavy civil and infrastructure construction projects. The role supports field construction activities by coordinating inspections, testing, documentation, and quality records to verify that the work conforms to contract documents, approved drawings, specifications, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
The Quality Control Coordinator works closely with the Quality Manager/Lead, Project Managers, Superintendents, Field Engineers/Coordinators, subcontractors, suppliers, third party testing agencies, consultants, and client/owner representatives to ensure quality requirements are understood, implemented, documented, and maintained throughout construction.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the project Quality Management Plan, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), procedures, checklists, inspection forms, and quality records.
- Review contract drawings, specifications, standards, approved submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, and construction procedures to identify applicable inspection and testing requirements.
- Coordinate and perform field inspections for heavy civil and infrastructure activities including earthworks, excavation, granular placement, drainage, underground utilities, concrete, reinforcing steel, formwork, structural components, asphalt, roadworks, waterproofing, coatings, and other civil works, as applicable to the project.
- Verify that required inspections are completed at the appropriate stages of construction and that applicable hold points, witness points, and notification requirements are satisfied before work proceeds.
- Coordinate third party inspection and testing activities including concrete, soils, aggregates, compaction, asphalt, structural materials, coatings, welding/NDT, and other specialized testing as required.
- Review inspection and testing results for compliance with project requirements and promptly identify results requiring follow up.
- Verify materials delivered to site against approved submittals, specifications, certifications, mill certificates, test reports, and other applicable quality documentation.
- Maintain traceability between installed work, material documentation, inspections, testing results, construction locations, lots, pours, and applicable quality records.
- Identify and document non-conforming work and assist with the preparation, tracking, investigation, disposition, corrective action, and close out of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), deficiencies, and quality observations.
- Support root cause investigations and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Coordinate with construction teams and subcontractors to ensure inspection requests are submitted with sufficient notice and work is ready for inspection.
- Participate in pre activity meetings, preparatory meetings, quality meetings, and coordination meetings as required.
- Monitor subcontractor compliance with project quality requirements and approved ITPs and procedures.
- Maintain accurate field inspection records, photographs, testing documentation, checklists, reports, and supporting quality records.
- Track outstanding quality documentation and follow up with subcontractors, suppliers, testing agencies, and project personnel to support timely completion and turnover.
- Assist with preparation and maintenance of turnover packages, quality documentation, as built records, and project close out documentation.
- Support internal, client, owner, and external audits and assist with addressing audit findings and corrective actions.
- Maintain quality documentation within applicable electronic document management systems such as Procore, Autodesk, SharePoint, or equivalent platforms.
- Promote quality awareness and continuous improvement throughout the project team.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, Quality Management, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
- 2-5+ years of experience in construction quality control, field inspection, construction coordination, or related heavy civil/infrastructure construction experience preferred.
- Experience with major infrastructure, transportation, transit, road, bridge, utility, structural concrete, or earthworks projects is considered an asset.
Skills & Competencies:
- Working knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, materials, inspection processes, and testing requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret civil, structural, utility, roadway, and other construction drawings and specifications.
- Understanding of ITPs, hold/witness points, inspection requirements, material traceability, NCRs, deficiencies, and construction quality records.
- Familiarity with concrete, reinforcing steel, earthworks, granular materials, asphalt, drainage, utilities, structural works, and associated testing.
- Strong documentation, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with field personnel, subcontractors, testing agencies, consultants, and client/owner representatives.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Bluebeam; experience with Procore, SharePoint, or similar construction management/document control platforms is an asset.
Certifications (Preferred but Not Required):
- American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification.
- CCIL Certified Laboratory Technician – Concrete, Aggregate, and Soils Testing.
