ASSISTANT OPERATIONS MANAGER - SEAFOOD & FISHING INDUSTRY
Location: Vancouver, BC | Full-Time | 5+ Years Experience
Compensation: $75,000–$95,000 to start, with flexibility to stretch for the right candidate, plus milestone pay increases, year-end bonuses, RRSP matching, a full benefits package, and discounts on seafood.
OVERVIEW
A well-established and respected seafood processing and logistics operation in BC's wild seafood industry is seeking a highly motivated, hands-on Assistant Operations Manager to support the Senior Vice President of Operations with the day-to-day execution of logistics, fleet coordination, and plant operations.
The right candidate is currently working on fishing vessels as a fishing professional - a fisherman, deckhand, or similar - and is ready to transition from the water to the docks. This role is built for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment and enjoys being both on the floor and in the field.
You will work closely with the Senior VP of Operations and senior leadership to ensure seamless coordination between fishing vessels, logistics, and plant operations.
This is not a desk-only role. You will be in the warehouse, on the dock, coordinating freight, solving real-time issues, and building relationships with fishermen and internal teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the Senior VP of Operations with daily operational activities
- Coordinate activities involving fishing vessels, docks, warehouse, freight, and plant operations
- Assist with fleet and transportation coordination
- Coordinate incoming and outgoing seafood shipments and freight
- Spend significant time on the floor, dock, warehouse, and in the field
- Build and maintain strong relationships with fishermen, vessel crews, suppliers, drivers, and internal teams
- Identify operational issues and resolve them quickly and practically
- Help ensure smooth movement of product from vessels through processing and logistics
- Assist with scheduling, planning, inventory movement, and day-to-day logistics
- Support plant operations and help maintain efficient workflows
- Use Excel and operational data to track activities and support decision-making
- Anticipate operational challenges and take action before issues escalate
- Work closely with senior management on process improvements and operational priorities
MUST-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS
- Direct, hands-on experience working aboard commercial fishing vessels - required
- Experience as a fisherman, deckhand, vessel crew member, or similar fishing professional
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- High level of initiative, accountability, and self-motivation
- Ability to operate autonomously and think ahead
- Strong practical problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Team-oriented with a hands-on mindset
- Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
- Experience in logistics, operations, transportation, or supply chain
- Forklift experience or willingness to obtain certification
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
