Job Overview

Apex Systems is seeking a Business Controls Consultant to join a leading financial services organization in Toronto. Reporting to the Senior Director, Business Controls, this role supports an enterprise-wide controls transformation program that is getting underway now, assessing, redesigning and optimizing controls across multiple business areas, with a focus on modernizing control testing, strengthening governance and improving efficiency and automation. The consultant partners with business, risk, technology, compliance and governance teams as well as external consulting firms, and is expected to own work packages independently from start to finish. This is a hands-on and consultative role, covering assessments, recommendations and executive materials, and the ability to frame complex information concisely for senior executives is the most important skill for success. Candidates at the Senior Manager or Director level are both considered, and skill set matters more than title.

Responsibilities

Controls Assessment and Testing

  • Conduct assessments of existing controls, governance frameworks and testing methodologies
  • Review current-state controls and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Complete risk assessments, control evaluations and technology intake activities as required
  • Support policy enhancement, process redesign and controls modernization initiatives

Transformation Strategy and Roadmap

  • Support the development of strategic recommendations and future-state operating models
  • Contribute to the creation of enterprise controls transformation roadmaps
  • Analyze transformation initiatives across the enterprise and identify opportunities for alignment and standardization
  • Identify implementation risks, dependencies and recommendations
  • Provide thought leadership and challenge existing approaches to improve outcomes

Executive Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop management presentations, executive materials and strategic communications that are concise and clear
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership
  • Facilitate workshops, working sessions and stakeholder discussions

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate across business, risk, technology, compliance and governance teams
  • Partner with consulting firms and internal stakeholders on proof-of-concept initiatives and transformation activities

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in controls, operational risk, governance, audit, compliance, risk management or controls transformation
  • Experience working within a large financial institution or banking environment, with a strong preference for banking controls experience
  • Strong understanding of internal control frameworks and risk management methodologies, such as COSO, SOX and operational risk frameworks
  • Experience conducting controls assessments, risk reviews, testing reviews or governance evaluations
  • Proven experience supporting transformation, change or strategic initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and develop practical recommendations
  • Experience working with Director, Senior Director, Executive and other senior stakeholders
  • Strong written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail and presentation quality, including the ability to present information succinctly to an executive audience
  • Experience developing management materials, executive presentations and strategic communications
  • Strong stakeholder management, facilitation and influencing skills
  • Ability to work independently, deliver high-quality work quickly and with urgency, and contribute thought leadership rather than simply execute assigned tasks
  • Practical experience is valued more than academic credentials

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Controls transformation experience within banking or financial services
  • Experience evaluating and improving controls testing methodologies
  • Consulting experience with major consulting firms or transformation engagements
  • Experience supporting enterprise-wide strategic initiatives
  • Exposure to operational controls, business controls, risk controls, technology controls or enterprise controls programs
  • Experience developing strategic roadmaps, future-state operating models or transformation strategies
  • Controls automation or process optimization experience
