Job#: 3058112
Job Description:
OpenShift / Kubernetes Platform Engineer
Apex Systems is seeking a Senior OpenShift / Kubernetes Platform Engineer to support a large enterprise banking client within a growing container platform team. This is a hands-on production support role focused on the administration, stability, scalability, and ongoing modernization of a large Red Hat OpenShift and Kubernetes environment.
The team currently supports
37 clusters across the organization and is expanding to support several major modernization initiatives, including the migration of legacy platforms to OpenShift and the introduction of new OpenShift clusters.
This individual will not be dedicated to a single application or project. Instead, they will work across the broader platform, partnering with application and infrastructure teams to maintain highly available container environments and improve operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on administration and production support for Red Hat OpenShift and Kubernetes environments across a large enterprise cluster footprint.
- Perform OpenShift/Kubernetes upgrades, patching, vulnerability remediation, and platform maintenance.
- Manage cluster capacity, namespaces, resource quotas, and access requests.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex production incidents across containerized environments.
- Follow established change management and incident management processes.
- Support surrounding platform technologies, including Redis Cache, Istio Service Mesh, Kafka, Grafana, Tempo, and Dynatrace.
- Work within RHEL Linux environments and leverage shell scripting to streamline operational activities.
- Support monitoring and observability capabilities using tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
- Partner with engineering teams using GitOps, GitHub, and Microsoft Azure.
- Identify opportunities to automate manual operational activities and help advance the team's longer-term Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices.
- Work collaboratively across numerous applications and platform initiatives in a fast-paced enterprise environment.
Must-Have Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on Red Hat OpenShift and/or Kubernetes experience within a production enterprise environment.
- Strong experience performing day-to-day Kubernetes/OpenShift platform operations, including upgrades, troubleshooting, capacity management, security remediation, namespace management, and platform support.
- 5+ years of production application or infrastructure support experience, including formal change and incident management processes.
- Strong Linux/RHEL administration experience.
- Strong shell scripting skills.
- Experience supporting highly available, business-critical production environments.
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on Red Hat OpenShift experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure and/or Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
- Experience with GitOps and GitHub.
- Experience with monitoring and observability technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, Tempo, Dynatrace, and OpenTelemetry.
- Understanding of SRE principles, automation, and reducing manual operational work.
- Previous development experience in any programming language is an asset but is not required.
Highly Desirable Skills
Experience with any one of the following will be a significant differentiator:
- Apache Kafka
- Redis Cache
- Istio / Service Mesh
Candidates who combine deep OpenShift/Kubernetes operational experience with one or more of these technologies will be particularly well suited for the environment.
What Makes This Opportunity Exciting
This is an opportunity to work within a
large-scale enterprise container environment supporting 37 clusters while contributing to major technology modernization initiatives.
The environment is continuing to evolve toward greater automation and SRE-oriented practices, giving the successful candidate an opportunity to make an impact not only through day-to-day platform operations, but also by helping the team
reduce manual processes, improve observability, increase reliability, and mature its automation capabilities over time.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The strongest candidate will be a
true OpenShift/Kubernetes platform operator, not someone whose experience is limited to deploying applications into Kubernetes. They should be comfortable owning production issues, performing upgrades and remediation, working directly within Linux environments, and supporting a complex enterprise platform.
Azure experience is preferred over AWS, but deep production Kubernetes operational experience is more important than cloud-provider experience alone.EEO Employer
