Job Description:
We seek an experienced and highly skilled Senior Database Administrator to be part of the Database Engineering team and lead the architecture, administration, and operational support of Microsoft SQL Server platforms across McKesson's enterprise environment.
As a Senior Database Administrator, you will provide technical leadership for enterprise database services spanning both Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) environments, ensuring high availability, scalability, security, and compliance for critical business applications.
Position Description
In this role, you will lead the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of enterprise SQL Server platforms across Azure, GCP and hybrid environments, driving modernization, automation, and reliability engineering initiatives.
- Builds and maintains enterprise database platforms, ensuring stability, scalability, and consistency across environments.
- Engineers repeatable database deployment patterns to standardize and accelerate rollout of new database instances.
- Creates self-service database provisioning capabilities, enabling teams to request and deploy database resources on demand.
- Develop standards, best practices, and governance for database infrastructure, operations, security, and automation.
- Drive database modernization initiatives including migration from on-premises SQL Server to Azure SQL managed services.
- Administer and support Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines, and SQL Server on-premises and hybrid deployments.
- Ensure database availability, performance, integrity, and recoverability.
- Manage upgrades, patching, maintenance, and capacity planning activities.
- Implement and support SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances, backup/recovery, geo-replication, and disaster recovery solutions.
- Define and validate recovery plans and recovery objectives (RTO/RPO).
- Lead failover testing and disaster recovery exercises.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize database performance, including root cause analysis and performance tuning.
- Establish reliability metrics, SLAs, SLIs, and operational standards, and implement observability solutions for proactive issue detection.
- Implement enterprise security controls including encryption, RBAC, auditing, vulnerability management, and privileged access controls.
- Ensure compliance with SOX, HIPAA, security policies, and regulatory requirements, and partner with security teams to remediate risks.
- Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation using PowerShell, Terraform, Azure DevOps, GitHub, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Automate database provisioning, configuration management, patching, monitoring, and operational workflows in support of Database DevOps.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to database engineers and administrators.
- Partner with Cloud Engineering, Infrastructure, Security, Application Development, and Architecture teams, and participate in major incident response and problem management.
Minimum Requirements
Typically requires 10+ years of SQL Server administration experience in large enterprise environments, including 5+ years supporting Azure database services and cloud platforms.
Critical Skills
- Deep expertise with Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, Azure Virtual Machines, and Backup and Recovery technologies.
- Experience with performance tuning and troubleshooting mission-critical databases.
- Oracle operational support, including day-to-day administration and monitoring of Oracle database environments.
- Oracle patch coordination, planning and applying patches with minimal disruption to production systems.
- Oracle backup/recovery, ensuring reliable backups and successful recovery in the event of data loss.
- Oracle performance troubleshooting, identifying and resolving bottlenecks to maintain optimal database performance.
- Working with application teams to align database changes with application requirements and release schedules.
- Expertise in database security, compliance, and operational governance.
- Experience with PowerShell, Terraform, Ansible, GitHub, and automation frameworks.
- Strong understanding of SRE practices, Agile methodologies, and operational excellence frameworks.
Additional Requirements
- Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate certification preferred
- Experience supporting healthcare, regulated, or highly compliant environments.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field or equivalent experience.
