Original job description
Project Accountant
Arkfield Capital | Toronto, ON
About the Role
Arkfield Capital is looking for a Project Accountant to help build and run the project accounting function across our development portfolio. You will own the financial control of a portfolio of projects under construction, from the day a contract is signed to the day the trade is paid. That covers budgets, commitments, change orders, invoices, the monthly close, construction loan draws and cash forecasting.
This is a ground-floor opportunity. Arkfield has grown quickly, and we are now redesigning how project accounting works across the platform. The Project Accountant will be the person who makes that process run. You won’t just run an existing system. You will help shape how it works, find what breaks, and work with our broader accounting team and business team to correct it and create a seamless system.
We are also building the function around modern tools. Yardi Voyager is our system of record and Procore connects to it for construction. We are actively using AI to automate the cumbersome parts of the work. We want someone who sees that as an opportunity: someone who will push those tools further and help decide where automation adds value, but understands that an accountant’s judgment has to manage the process and oversee the system.
This is a start-up environment. The team is lean, the business moves quickly, and you will work directly with Asset Management, Development, Construction and senior leadership. You will also deal with institutional lenders, cost consultants and joint venture partners. The learning curve is steep. The role suits someone who is organized, precise and commercially minded. You should be comfortable holding budget owners to deadlines, and you should want to take on more responsibility as the function and the company grow.
What You’ll Do
- Own the budgets, commitments and job cost records for a portfolio of construction projects in Yardi. You will be the go-to person for where each project stands financially.
- Review invoice packages (progress claims, schedules of values, statutory declarations, WSIB clearances) against their commitments. Help refine those tools over time to monitor these packages over time.
- Run the monthly close for your projects on a fixed calendar, including accruals, bank reconciliations and HST.
- Prepare the monthly job cost report: budget, committed, spent, cost to complete and variance. It is the document budget owners and leadership use to manage each project.
- Prepare construction loan draw packages for institutional lenders and cost consultants, sometimes for several draws in the same month.
- Build the three-month cash forecast that drives the weekly cash flow meeting, and support capital call sizing for equity-funded projects.
- Prepare payment reconciliations and manage holdback in line with the prompt payment and holdback rules of the Ontario Construction Act.
- Own the connection between Procore, Yardi and the project financial models, so that draws, forecasts and reports all come from the same reconciled numbers.
- Recommend improvements to forms, controls, workflows and automation as you go.
What We’re Looking For
- A degree in Accounting or Finance. A CPA designation, or substantial progress toward one, is preferred.
- 3–5 years of accounting experience, ideally including construction or real estate development accounting, job costing or construction lending.
- Experience with Yardi Voyager (job cost module) is a strong asset. Procore experience is an asset.
- Familiarity with construction draws, holdback and the Ontario Construction Act, or the appetite to learn them quickly.
- Advanced Excel skills, and real interest in using AI and automation to remove manual work, not just tolerate it.
- A high degree of accuracy, professional skepticism and attention to detail.
- Confidence working with project managers, developers and senior leadership, including pushing back when a commitment, budget or deadline isn’t where it should be.
- A builder’s mindset: you see a process that is still taking shape as an opportunity, not a frustration.
- The ability to manage several projects, lenders and deadlines at once in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
What You’ll Gain
- End-to-end ownership of a portfolio of real estate development projects, from commitment through to lender draw and payment.
- A hand in building a project accounting function: processes, controls and tools that will carry the platform through its next stage of growth.
- Room to grow as the platform grows. As the process expands to more projects and asset classes, we expect it to create opportunities for broader responsibility and leadership within the accounting team.
