Toldo Chair in Christian Studies

Employer: Assumption University

Compensation Range: $65,000-$70,000 per year

Job Location: Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Application Deadline: November 16, 2026

Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2027

Job Type: Onsite and Part-Time

Assumption University invites applications for the new Toldo Chair in Christian Studies. We welcome applicants trained in any or multiple academic disciplines (theology, history, gender studies, political science, literature, sociology, and more) where the study of Christianity was a central focus. The chair will also be accorded an appropriate professorial rank (assistant professor, associate professor, or professor) at Assumption University. The chair was established through a generous donation from the Toldo Foundation and its launch coincides with Assumption University’s 170th anniversary in 2027.

The chair will have three areas of responsibility, namely teaching, research, and service.

Teaching

The chair will teach courses in the Catholic studies program and additional cognate courses. The chair may also offer a special topics course in their area of expertise or design a new course. The chair would also facilitate directed reading courses on specialized topics and may supervise or serve as the program reader on major paper committees. The chair will assist with providing academic mentoring to students and prospective students.

Research

The research component will be based on the chair’s current scholarly interests within Christian studies. At the end of their term, the chair will present their work in a public forum. The goal would be to draft a refereed article or book chapter based on the research conducted during their tenure as chair.

Service

The chair will deliver public learning opportunities for diverse audiences in Windsor-Essex. For example, the chair might lead a workshop, organize a panel, host a lunch and learn, or be a guest speaker at one of the area high schools, colleges or universities. The chair will also serve on Assumption University’s Ecumenical Committee and Christian Culture Series Committee. It is expected that the chair will contribute to Assumption University’s long tradition of ecumenical and interfaith dialogue and initiatives.

Candidate Qualifications

  • A completed doctorate in a relevant field where the scholarly study of Christianity had a central focus, such as in the dissertation, coursework, or comprehensive exams.
  • A record of university-level teaching experience at various levels. An ability to teach courses in Catholic studies is required.
  • An active research agenda evidenced by publications, conference presentations, participation in professional organizations, guest lectures, and other relevant scholarly activities.
  • A service record demonstrated through volunteer work with various charitable organizations and not-for-profits, committees and boards, or within the university setting.

Duration

The position is a one-year contract as of the start of employment date with the possibility of renewal pending a successful review.

Compensation

The chair’s salary range will be $65,000 to $70,000 per year and be based on educational credentials, teaching experience, research publications, and service work.

Research, Professional, and Community Development Grant

In addition to the salary, the chair will receive a research, professional, and community development grant. This grant may offset the costs associated with computer equipment and software, community events, conference fees, travel costs, books and supplies, and more.
