Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to play a key role in the delivery of a first-of-a-kind Small Modular Reactor program in Ontario. This position offers the opportunity to lead the design, integration, procurement, testing, and commissioning of critical electrical systems supporting new nuclear generation.
Your role
- Lead the design, development, review, and delivery of electrical system engineering for SMR nuclear projects through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and turnover phases.
- Act as the technical and discipline lead for major electrical systems covering: High Voltage (500kV), Medium Voltage (6.9kV), and Low Voltage (<600V) power distribution systems, AC and DC power systems (<250VDC), Safety Class 1, 2, 3, and non-safety-class electrical systems, Emergency and standby power systems, Diesel generators (FLEX and MW range), UPS systems, rectifiers, inverters, batteries, and battery chargers, Motor Control Centers, Switchgear, load centers, and distribution panels, Power systems calculations (ETAP), Power, control, and instrumentation cabling systems, Grounding and bonding systems, Lightning protection systems, Lighting analysis and building services (Dialux), Cathodic protection, Heat trace and de-icing systems, Electrical Penetrations (Fire, gas-tight, flood, radiation shielding), Communication systems (PAS, PBX, Radio, Telephone, LAN).
- Lead electrical integration activities between plant systems, structures, equipment vendors, site utilities, and interfacing engineering disciplines.
- Prepare, review, approve, and technically supervise the development of: Single-line diagrams, Control schematic diagrams, Wiring and interconnection diagrams, Cable block diagrams and cable schedules (Smart Plant, Edison), Equipment layouts and installation drawings, Electrical calculations and design analyses, Design specifications and technical reports, Bill of Quantities, Engineering change packages, Design requirements documents, Procurement specifications, Commissioning and test procedures, 2D and 3D modelling design (Revit, AutoCAD, Smart Plant).
- Lead technical reviews and ensure engineering deliverables meet quality, safety, regulatory, and licensing requirements.
- Support equipment specification, vendor evaluation, bid reviews, technical evaluations, and procurement activities.
- Coordinate with project partners and electrical equipment manufacturers to support design integration and issue resolution.
- Lead and support field engineering activities including design walkdowns, constructability reviews, installation support, field changes, troubleshooting, and commissioning support.
- Provide technical leadership during design, construction, testing, energization, startup, and plant commissioning activities.
- Interface with project management teams to support progress reporting, scope development, planning, cost estimating, risk management, schedule development, and project execution strategies.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian and International nuclear, electrical, and industrial codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Mentor and develop junior and intermediate engineers, designers, and technical staff while fostering a strong safety, quality, and continuous improvement culture.
- Participate in proposal development, business growth initiatives, lessons learned programs, and engineering innovation activities.
About you
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or eligible for registration in Ontario.
- Typically 10+ years of relevant experience in electrical power systems engineering, with significant experience in nuclear, utility, power generation, transmission and distribution, industrial, or other highly regulated industries.
- Experience preparing, reviewing, and approving engineering deliverables including calculations, specifications, drawings, reports, requisitions, and design change documentation.
- Experience performing or reviewing electrical system studies using ETAP, Dialux, or equivalent analysis software.
- Experience supporting procurement, vendor management, equipment qualification, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), construction, commissioning, and operational readiness activities.
- Experience with design reviews, 3D model reviews, digital engineering tools, BIM, Navisworks, SmartPlant, Autodesk products, or similar platforms is an asset.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex multidisciplinary projects.
- Experience with project management, scope development, risk management, change management, and engineering delivery within EPC/EPCM environments is an asset.
- Practical field experience supporting construction, installation, startup, testing, commissioning, operations, or maintenance activities is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of Canadian and international standards including CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, OESC, NEC, and the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Familiarity with Canadian nuclear regulatory requirements and nuclear quality assurance programs.
- Proven ability to coordinate effectively with clients, utilities, regulators, reactor vendors, constructors, suppliers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of electrical equipment and plant design principles.
- Strong technical expertise in MV and LV electrical power distribution systems, AC/DC systems, emergency power systems, and electrical infrastructure associated with nuclear power plants.
- Highly collaborative and self-driven individual, leading to strong collaboration across multiple groups and organizations.
- Strong communication, leadership, stakeholder management, and technical presentation skills.
- Existing nuclear security clearance, OPG clearance, or the ability to obtain required security clearances is required.
- Willing to become a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW).
