Job Description

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is currently seeking a Materials/Welding Engineer to join our Materials, Welding, and Chemistry – Engineering Excellence team. This position is for a senior‑level engineer who demonstrates strong technical capability and growing leadership in materials, metallurgical, and welding engineering, with a particular emphasis on manufacturing and fabrication support in nuclear and other regulated environments.

Your role

  • Lead and execute materials, metallurgical, and welding engineering activities supporting manufacturing, refurbishment, construction, inspections, readiness reviews, and resolution of non-conformance issues.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on welding processes, procedures, qualifications, repairs, and acceptance criteria for pressure-retaining, structural, and nuclear components.
  • Develop, review, and approve welding specifications, WPS/PQRs, weld repair plans, manufacturing procedures, and technical documentation in compliance with QA programs, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve fabrication and manufacturing challenges, including weld quality, heat treatment, metallurgical conditions, dimensional control, inspection findings, and failure analyses.
  • Support major nuclear refurbishment projects and new build programs by addressing materials, metallurgical, welding, and manufacturing engineering requirements.
  • Collaborate with clients, suppliers, fabricators, inspectors, and testing laboratories to deliver technical solutions while meeting project budget, schedule, and quality objectives.

About you

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Materials, Metallurgical, Welding Engineering, or a related discipline, with a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario considered an asset.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in materials, metallurgical, and welding engineering, supporting manufacturing, fabrication, construction, refurbishment, and safety-critical industries, preferably within the nuclear sector.
  • Strong knowledge of nuclear and pressure equipment codes and standards, including CSA N285 and ASME BPVC Sections II, III, V, VIII, and IX, with direct experience supporting ASME Section III or VIII component manufacturing.
  • Expertise in welding engineering practices, including welding processes, procedure and welder qualifications, weld metallurgy, heat-affected zone behavior, fabrication defects, and repair methodologies.
  • Experience evaluating NDE results, inspection reports, laboratory testing data, and conducting metallurgical examinations, failure analyses, fitness-for-service assessments, and root-cause investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams, provide technical leadership and mentorship, and support engineering decision-making related to material degradation, corrosion, fatigue, cracking, and manufacturing quality issues.
