Position Summary

The Capacity and Performance Manager ensures that mainframe capacity and performance meet current and future business needs while optimizing cost and resource utilization. This role analyzes capacity and performance data, trends, incidents, thresholds, and forecasts to proactively identify constraints and prevent system overload.

The role ensures that IT component capacity is sufficient to meet required service levels, optimizes utilization of existing resources, and provides recommendations to the GTD Capacity Coordinator and Capacity Director regarding capacity requirements, demand forecasts, performance improvements, and appropriate service levels.

Responsibilities

  • Perform capacity planning as needed, typically for specific hardware or software platforms.
  • Gather and analyze business demand, workload, utilization, and forecast data required to develop capacity plans.
  • Review capacity and performance reports, assess risks and opportunities, and recommend actions to the Capacity Director or GTD Capacity Coordinator.
  • Create and adapt capacity assessment criteria and alert thresholds.
  • Ensure that monitoring levels for resource capacity and system performance are adequate and that data recorded in capacity management databases are kept up to date and utilized by the capacity management process.
  • Determine the most appropriate forecasting methods and implement them.
  • Forecast trends in component usage based on available data.
  • Identify, interpret, and disseminate information used in the capacity decision-making process.
  • Participate in the development of capacity plans by evaluating forecasts and identifying capacity needs based on the scheduled timeline.
  • Monitor trends in component utilization and report capacity variances.
  • Produce technical and management reports at regular intervals detailing actual component utilization, trends, and forecasts.
  • Monitor the potential effects of software and middleware on hardware utilization, or vice versa, to determine performance management service levels.
  • Evaluate new hardware and software that could improve the efficiency of the capacity management process.
  • Verify that reliability, availability, and disaster recovery requirements are considered in capacity planning activities.
  • Reduce software costs (4RHA, MSU).
  • Maximize the use of existing resources (zIIP, WLM).
  • Obtain performance and capacity information to facilitate incident or problem resolution or to analyze the impact of changes.
  • Identify trends, variances, and ways to address them.
  • Develop a capacity plan that enables the achievement of capacity management process objectives.
  • Proactively generate a forecast report, based on past trends, to anticipate volume and upcoming peaks.
