Job description
The Maintenance Manager at NGS is primarily responsible for overseeing all aspects of the maintenance program to ensure safe, compliant and reliable plant operations, troubleshooting and turnarounds. The capacity rating of this 2 on 1 combined cycle plant is approximately 900 MW. This role is also responsible for overseeing the NGS Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
The Maintenance Manager will report to the Plant Manager and will lead a team consisting of Mechanical Technicians, Electrical & Instrumentation Technicians, and a Planner. This role requires availability after normal working hours and weekends, as needed.
Responsibilities
As the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible to:
- Provide effective leadership and direction to continuously improve your teams’ business performance in terms of health, safety and environment, compliance, reliability, efficiency, productivity, and plant availability
- Ensure all documentation, reports, and records are maintained and updated in compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulatory requirements and company policies/procedures pertaining to maintenance; including, but not limited to, NERC, TSSA, MECP, ECC, and the IESO.
- Understand and manage facility risks, reliability, availability, and performance
- Understand and incorporate the commercial contracts and obligations of the facility into the maintenance strategies and plans
- Effectively manage all resources, including people, finances, materials, and time to ensure maximum efficiency in planning, forecasting, implementation, and plant availability including establishing and maintaining appropriate staff capability for the maintenance function
- Develop and foster an environment which actively enables and encourages employee innovation, continuous improvement, and commitment to operational excellence
- Develop, execute, and maintain the maintenance program to ensure the facility is available to generate electricity when dispatched. The maintenance program will include short and long-range plans
- Develop, execute, and maintain a contract services strategy that is coordinated with the internal resources and meets planned and unplanned maintenance requirements
- Manage O&M budget development and forecasting to achieve short & long-term maintenance objectives and site performance goals for safety, availability, and reliability
- Participate in station business planning process
- Manage and coordinate emergency response with a requirement to attend the plant during emergency and outage situations
- Manage the Health, Safety, and development of staff
Within the role, the Maintenance Manager will be expected to:

- Manage and coordinate emergency response with a requirement to be on call to respond to emergency and outage situations
- Contribute to department and companywide objectives and initiatives
- Work collaboratively with Operations in activities such as outage scheduling, work planning and troubleshooting plant issues
- Implement and execute the work management process. This is done through the use of Maximo for preventive and corrective work order tracking and completion
- Plan the maintenance of the facility to support its ongoing operation consistent with the commercial objectives, reliability objectives, and safety requirements. Review of integrity plans and operational history, along with current or lingering operational issues help develop the maintenance plan
- Maintain the facility through the management of the maintenance team and contracted services as appropriate. Manage the planning, scheduling and execution of maintenance work and Plant outages to meet scope, schedule, and cost objectives
- Detailed planning of the bi-annual outages to execute the maintenance plan and repairs required in the plant. Work collaboratively Detailed scheduling, assigning of job leads, and work duties, contracting resources as required, reviewing outage scope vs budget and plans and writing the pre and post outage reports
- Work collaboratively with peers and support functions across the Atura fleet and business.
- Establish and manage maintenance contracts to meet all of the Plant’s anticipated needs. Maintain relations with contractors. Manage execution of contracted work on site. Ensure compliance of contractors with Health, Safety and Environment programs and legal requirements
- Procurement functions including PO management within the bounds of accountability.
- Establish spare parts requirements, order appropriate spares, and manage spare parts inventory

Education, Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant Red Seal trade certification such as Mechanical/Electrical/Instrumentation, First Class Power Engineer, Professional Engineer, or a combination of the preceding certifications
- Hands-on experience in maintenance of power plants
- Excellent grasp of the maintenance planning and execution requirements of a state of the art combined cycle power plant and a proven ability to carry them out effectively
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills combined with the ability to utilize those skills during interactions with peers, employees, internal and external customers, and community groups
- Experience with conflict resolution and problem-solving tools and processes
- Experience in effective resource allocation and utilization in the financial, people and procurement areas
- Demonstrated leadership in the health, safety, and environment, change management, employee development, performance management, and team building areas
- 7 or more years of related power plant experience is preferred
- Supervisory experience in a unionized environment would be considered an asset
