Original job description

About Us Logistics is broken. Let’s fix it. We are a team of engineers, product designers, and customer champions applying the most transformative technology of our times, AI, to one of the largest industries in the world: logistics. Our mission is to streamline freight brokerage, carrier management, and 3PL operations through automation, freeing teams to focus on high-value strategic work. Overview Augment is building AI teammates - not tools - that work alongside operations, logistics, and customer support teams to automate complex workflows. We’re growing quickly and are looking for an Engineering Manager to help lead and scale one of our core engineering teams as we build the future of autonomous operations. In this role, you’ll manage a team of engineers, stay hands-on with technical decisions, and work closely with Product and cross-functional partners to ship impactful, reliable systems. You’ll help shape both the people and the technical direction of the team as we continue to grow. What You’ll Do Manage and grow a high-performing team of engineers through coaching, feedback, and career development Drive technical execution on key product and platform initiatives, ensuring the team ships high-quality, reliable systems Stay hands-on when needed - participate in architecture reviews, write production code occasionally, and support critical decision-making Partner closely with Product, AI, and Ops to define roadmaps, clarify requirements, and align priorities Experience building 0→1 products, with a willingness to stay hands-on while scaling and shaping the engineering function. Improve engineering processes, rituals, and on-call practices to help the team move faster with increasing quality Create clarity through strong communication - ensuring teams understand goals, trade-offs, and success criteria Collaborate with other engineering managers to shape engineering culture, standards, and best practices Participate in hiring and onboarding to help scale our engineering organization, including building and leading our new Customer Support product team. What We’re Looking For 6+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years in engineering leadership or people management Strong technical foundation in building distributed systems and backend services using TypeScript, Node.js, or Python Experience leading teams in fast-moving, high-growth environments Ability to balance hands-on technical involvement with team leadership and execution oversight Strong communicator who can explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders Comfortable working through ambiguity and helping teams break down complex projects into deliverable milestones Excited to work in a hybrid capacity from our office in San Francisco help continue to build a collaborative, high-energy engineering hub. Bonus Points For: Experience at early- or growth-stage startups Experience working with AI agents, LLMs, or agentic architectures Background in logistics, freight, or related industries Experience scaling engineering teams or working across multiple offices Open-source contributions, technical writing, or mentorship experience Why Join Us? Competitive Salary + Stock Options Comprehensive Health, Vision, and Dental Benefits Flexible PTO On-site Gym Monthly stipend About Augment At Augment, we set out to create a fully autonomous AI platform that streamlines operations and reclaims the human element in logistics. Our founders recognized a pattern: talented professionals were stuck handling manual data entry, phone calls, and repetitive tasks, instead of focusing on high-impact problem-solving and strategic decision-making. That insight became our mission - to free logistics professionals from busywork so they can focus on what truly drives business growth. Augment isn’t just about efficiency; it’s about transforming an entire industry by empowering teams with AI-driven solutions that make logistics smarter, faster, and more adaptive. Join us on this journey! Augment is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values diversity at our company. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected status. Augment complies with federal, state, and local laws regarding equal employment opportunity and reasonable accommodation. If you need assistance or an accommodation during the application or interview process, please contact your recruiter. We also consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records in accordance with applicable federal, state and local fair-chance / ban-the-box laws (for example, but not limited to, the California Fair Chance Act). Our hiring process uses AI-powered tools to assist with screening and evaluating applications based on job-related criteria. All AI-assisted outputs are reviewed by human recruiters who make all decisions about which candidates advance in the process.
