Position Overview
At Autodesk, we are exploring new ways to make design and engineering software smarter, more intuitive, and more personal. AI is helping us rethink how millions of people interact with products like AutoCAD, Revit, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Forma.
The Personalized Experiences Team works across Autodesk to bring AI, machine learning, and personalization into our products. We collaborate with product teams, experiment with new ideas, and build capabilities that benefit customers across the Autodesk ecosystem.
We are looking for a Senior Software Developer who enjoys building great software, solving interesting problems, and thinking in systems, not just files. You will help develop AI-powered experiences, including the next generation of the Autodesk Assistant app, and the applications and services behind them, working primarily with TypeScript, Electron, and Python.
You will work alongside software engineers, applied scientists, and product teams to build solutions that are reliable, easy to extend, and ready to evolve as AI technologies advance. When given a new feature, your first question should be "Where does this belong?" and only then "How do I write it?"
Public Context
Learn more about Autodesk Assistant and Autodesk's public announcement of its next-generation standalone Assistant experience.
Responsibilities
- Design and build features for AI-powered personalization across Autodesk products, including the next-generation Autodesk Assistant experience
- Develop and improve desktop applications, APIs, and supporting services
- Build modular, extensible systems that make it easier to introduce new capabilities as products evolve
- Explore practical integrations for AI technologies, including LLMs and intelligent agents
- Design clear contracts for plugins, manifests, registries, SDKs, public APIs, and internal interfaces where they are truly needed
- Protect dependency direction, data ownership, public contracts, and package boundaries
- Identify architectural drift, cycles, leaky abstractions, and coupling risks, then propose practical fixes
- Write short technical proposals, architecture notes, invariants, and decision records before meaningful changes
- Improve developer tools, workflows, scaffolding, lint rules, tests, ratchets, and CI checks so the team can build and deliver with confidence
- Work effectively with both human teammates and AI coding agents by keeping code, docs, and project layout predictable
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Experience with AWS or similar cloud
- 5+ years building and maintaining large, long-lived software applications. We value having lived with your design decisions over time more than having started many greenfield projects
- Strong TypeScript skills and solid software engineering fundamentals
- Experience designing and working with complex applications, APIs, or distributed systems
- Experience with Electron or comparable desktop application architecture
- Python experience, especially where Python integrates with a larger application or service layer
- Strong fundamentals in software design: separation of concerns, dependency management, API design, contract design, versioning, and incremental evolution
- Good problem-solving skills, sound engineering judgment, and an appreciation for clean, maintainable code
- Comfort writing tests and using automation to enforce architectural conventions
- Strong written communication: proposals, architecture decision records, design notes, and developer-facing docs
- Experience with AI-powered applications, LLMs, RAG, AI agents, recommendation systems, or personalization systems
- Experience with Agentic Framework such as : LangGraph, LangChain, or comparable orchestration frameworks
- Experience building SDKs, plugin systems, extension registries, or marketplace-like systems
- Experience with Electron main/renderer boundaries, IPC, preload scripts, context isolation, packaging, and cross-platform desktop concerns
- Experience designing local service boundaries between TypeScript/Electron and Python
- Experience with cloud services, APIs, or distributed systems.
- Experience creating internal tooling, code generators, lint rules, dependency checks, or architectural CI gates
- Experience maintaining public or semi-public APIs over multiple versions
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools and workflows
- You see structure before code: you know where a feature belongs, what boundary it crosses, and whether it needs a module, service, plugin, library, package, or application-layer change
- You design with judgment: you know when an abstraction is useful, when it is too heavy, and how to protect contracts, invariants, ownership, and documented intent over time
- You have lived with your own design decisions across large, long-lived systems and understand the cost of coupling, unclear ownership, and architectural drift
- You value small, focused changes, explicit contracts, clear documentation, clean code, and codebases that both teammates and AI agents can navigate safely
- You are pragmatic and collaborative: you can follow existing patterns for a quick fix, name real technical debt when you see it, and stay curious about AI and unfamiliar technologies
