Original job description
Headquartered in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, we're a Canadian tech company making our mark on the global stage. Recently recognized with the 2026 ACADA Innovation Leader Award and backed by an $11.7 million commitment from Lockheed Martin Canada, we're bringing groundbreaking holographic technology into real-world applications.
Our Edmonton operation plays a critical role in developing and manufacturing the advanced flat-panel technology at the heart of our displays.
The Role
As HR Manager, you'll be based in Edmonton, working closely with our Edmonton Managing Director while being part of Avalon's HR team in St. John's. You'll independently manage local HR responsibilities while collaborating on company-wide priorities, supporting our people, and helping scale our Edmonton operations.
We're looking for an experienced HR/People Operations professional who is curious, proactive, and always thinking a few steps ahead. You'll thrive with autonomy, using sound judgment to set priorities and move initiatives forward. You're comfortable with ambiguity, adapting as priorities shift, and finding practical solutions when there isn't an established playbook. You'll have a collaborative team behind you, along with the freedom to bring forward ideas, challenge thinking, and turn strategy into action.
This position reports to the Director of HR in St. John's and requires balancing independent, on-site responsibilities with ongoing collaboration on company-wide HR initiatives and priorities.
This is an on-site role. Building relationships and understanding the day-to-day operation are essential to your success.
What You'll Do
- Oversee Edmonton HR operations, including onboarding, employee relations, engagement, and team-building initiatives, while improving efficiency and the employee experience.
- Partner directly with the Edmonton Managing Director on people decisions, workforce priorities, and organizational challenges.
- Collaborate with the St. John's HR team on company-wide initiatives, policies, and priorities, strengthening communication and connections between both locations.
- Reinforce clear expectations, address performance challenges, and support employees in doing their best work.
- Anticipate talent needs, support recruitment, and contribute to workforce planning as the Edmonton team grows.
- Identify opportunities for improvement, challenge existing approaches, and take ownership of initiatives from planning through implementation.
- Build trust, navigate sensitive employee matters, and use employee feedback to drive meaningful improvements.
- Analyze people-related trends and metrics to inform decisions and support organizational priorities.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field.
- 5+ years of HR experience, ideally in an HR Manager, HR Business Partner, People Operations, or senior generalist role, with both strategic and operational responsibilities.
- Experience advising senior leadership, influencing decisions, and navigating employee relations matters with confidence, professionalism, and empathy.
- Strong knowledge of Alberta employment legislation and employee relations practices.
- Sound business judgment and a proactive, adaptable approach, with the ability to balance employee needs and business priorities, make decisions independently, and adjust as circumstances change.
- A proactive, adaptable, and resourceful approach, with the confidence to make decisions, adjust to changing priorities, and move initiatives forward in an evolving environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine sense of empathy, kindness, and respect, with the ability to build trust, navigate difficult conversations, and maintain fairness and accountability.
- A hands-on approach, with the ability to move comfortably between strategic priorities and everyday HR responsibilities.
- Ability to use people data and technology to identify trends, improve processes, and support informed decisions.
- Experience in a high-growth technology, engineering, or advanced manufacturing environment is strongly preferred, particularly where you've supported scaling teams and evolving business priorities.
- Experience using AI tools to improve HR processes, automate routine work, or create operational efficiencies is an asset.
- Innovation at the Core – Work on cutting-edge technology and play a key role in shaping the future of holographic displays.
- Collaborative Culture – Join a team of passionate, innovative professionals who value creativity, teamwork, and pushing boundaries.
- Autonomy & Ownership – Enjoy the freedom to take initiative, explore new ideas, and drive meaningful outcomes.

- Work-Life Balance – Benefit from flexible work policies that support your well-being.
- Competitive Compensation – We offer competitive salaries, employee stock option grants, and 100% employer-paid health and dental benefits, allowing you to share in our success as we grow.
