Original job description

Job Title: Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) Optical Engineer

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Pay Rate: $150,000 CAN

Employment Type: Direct Hire

Benefits: medical, dental, vision, vacation, bonus, and more

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking an Optical Engineer for a photonic integrated circuits design firm, who would act as the Simulation SME and Lead. This would be a great opportunity for someone with experience in circuit simulation and optical device design looking to further their career in integrated photonics.

Simulate photonic integrated circuits using commercial tools (RSoft, Lumerical) and custom Python code; automate design optimization and parameter sweeps

Design and layout optical devices (AWGs, optical hybrids, polarization splitters) across silica, silicon nitride, and silicon photonics platforms

Validate designs through measurement correlation, convergence analysis, and linking measured performance to fabrication variables

Lead optical characterization; define test plans and guide technicians in equipment operation and data quality procedures

Maintain simulation codebase and validation records; communicate technical results to engineering and management teams

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics, or Photonics; or M.Sc. with 4+ years integrated-photonics industry experience

Strong foundation in guided-wave optics theory, commercial photonics simulators (RSoft, Lumerical), and inverse optical design methodologies

Proficiency in Python scientific computing (NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib) and hands-on optical testing (tunable lasers, spectrum analyzers, fiber alignment, insertion loss/PDL measurement)
