Original job description

Experience Aviva

Together, we are Aviva. Our values - Care, Commitment, Community, and Confidence - guide how we show up for each other and for our customers. Individually, they’re words. Together, they define who we are.

At Aviva Canada, we put people first, our employees, our customers, and our communities. We’re proud of a culture built on care, inclusion, and collaboration, where your voice matters and your growth is supported. We’re not just about insurance; we’re about making a real difference by protecting what matters most.

The Opportunity

You'll be part of a culture built on inclusion, collaboration, and mutual respect, with opportunities to learn, grow, and make an impact. Together, we help customers and communities protect the things they value most.

Join an exciting team of actuaries and software engineers modernizing the tools that support insurance pricing. By replacing complex spreadsheet-based workflows with robust applications, we help make actuarial processes more reliable, transparent, and efficient. Our team combines deep actuarial knowledge with a commitment to software development practices.

We are looking for a software developer who enjoys building well-designed applications and takes ownership of delivering maintainable solutions.

As a Senior Pricing Developer on the Technical Indication Model in R (TIMR) team, you will be comfortable working independently on user interfaces, making sound technical decisions, and applying established software engineering practices. While experience in insurance and statistical programming with R would be valuable in this role, our primary interest is in developers who are curious, adaptable, and excited by the opportunity to modernize a business domain that has traditionally relied on spreadsheets.

As our software portfolio continues to grow, we are investing in engineering practices, technologies, and design approaches that complement our existing strengths in actuarial methodology and statistical programming.

What You’ll Do

Develop new features and capabilities for actuarial applications built with R Shiny.
Design and enhance user interfaces using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to deliver intuitive, responsive user experiences.
Develop shared JavaScript components to improve maintainability and accelerate feature development.
Refactor R code to leverage reusable JavaScript components where appropriate.
Work closely with actuaries and other stakeholders to understand business challenges, refine requirements, and translate ideas into practical solutions.
Build and maintain automated test suites of UI components
Adhere to software engineering best practices, including code reviews, testing, documentation, and continuous improvement.
Help shape the technical direction of a growing suite of actuarial applications.

What You’ll Bring

5+ years of experience in software engineering.
Education or equivalent experience in a quantitative discipline such as actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, data science, or a related field.
Strong JavaScript, HTML, and CSS skills.
Experience structuring UI codebases for maintainability.
Ability to independently design and implement user interfaces.
Experience with R or other analytical programming languages (e.g., Python, SAS), with R experience strongly preferred and a willingness to learn R.
Solid software engineering fundamentals (version control, testing, code review, effort estimation, and the ability to quickly learn new languages, frameworks, and technologies).

What Makes You Stand Out

Experience customizing R Shiny components using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
Experience using agentic development tools to improve, refactor, or generate code.

What You’ll Get

The opportunity to help shape a growing software portfolio while working closely with domain experts in home and auto insurance pricing and the larger P&C actuarial community.
A collaborative engineering and business team environment focused on building maintainable applications, solving practical business challenges, and applying modern engineering practices to complex workflows.
The salary band for this position ranges from $80,000 to $110,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
Compelling rewards package including base compensation, eligibility for annual bonus, retirement savings, share plan, health benefits, personal wellness, and volunteer opportunities.
Hybrid flexible work model.
Outstanding career development opportunities.
We’ll support your professional development education.
Competitive vacation package with the option to purchase 5 extra days off per year.
Employee-driven programs focused on gender, LGBTQ+, origins, diversity, and inclusion.
Corporate wellness programs to support our employees’ physical and mental health.

This job advertisement is for an existing vacancy which has been posted both internally & externally.
