Original job description
We are looking for an experienced Senior Embedded Firmware Developer to join our engineering team on a 6-month contract, with the potential to transition into a full-time role based on performance and upcoming project needs. In this role, you will collaborate closely with our hardware design and overseas engineering teams to architect, develop, debug, and validate embedded software for residential appliance controls and next-generation IoT platforms.
What You’ll Do
- Architect, develop, debug, and release robust embedded software (low-level device drivers, application layers, and test software) using Assembly, C, or C++.
- Work alongside hardware electronics designers to define system architectures and ensure seamless integration of electronics and firmware.
- Drive the architectural implementation of IoT and cloud-based connectivity solutions in coordination with our business development and engineering teams.
- Liaise with clients as needed on software design requirements, translating specifications into software flow diagrams and robust implementations.
- Set up and utilize debugging tools (such as LabVIEW, ST-Link, etc.) to perform root-cause analysis and resolve software issues.
- Maintain high code quality through rigorous version control, continuous improvement, and comprehensive technical documentation.
What You Bring
- 7+ years of professional experience in embedded firmware design and electronic controls development.
- Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Electronics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong mastery of C and C++, with working knowledge of Assembly where required.
- Hands-on experience with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and low-level device drivers.
- Proven experience taking embedded products from concept through to production release.
- Proficiency with standard debugging environments (e.g., ST-Link, LabVIEW, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
- A track record of effective collaboration across cross-functional and remote/overseas teams.
- Ability to work independently and manage deliverables efficiently against project timelines.
Nice to Have
- Experience in the consumer appliance or HVAC space.
- Experience implementing wireless/IoT connectivity (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE) and cloud integration.
- Certifications in embedded systems or firmware development.
What We Offer
- A 6-month contract with a clear path to a full-time role.
- The chance to work on controls and next-generation IoT products from concept to production.
- A collaborative engineering team working across Canada and overseas.
- A hybrid work arrangement with 2 days from office
