Controller – Family Office

About Axes Capital

Axes Capital is a privately held family office based in Montréal with investments across real estate, healthcare, financial services and other private operating businesses.

The portfolio includes corporations, partnerships, holding companies and investment entities with varied reporting, financing, tax and operational requirements. Axes Capital takes an active approach to its investments and may become directly involved in a portfolio company’s financial operations when required.

Axes Capital is seeking a highly hands-on Controller to oversee financial reporting, controls and administration across the family office and its investment entities.

This is a broad, entrepreneurial role spanning multi-entity reporting, financial controls, acquisitions, investment structuring, financings and portfolio-company support.

Position Summary

The Controller will oversee day-to-day finance for Axes Capital and its related real estate, investment, holding and operating entities.

The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-moving and relatively unstructured environment while maintaining exceptionally strong financial controls, documentation and reporting standards.

The role requires flexibility. At times, the Controller will provide high-level oversight of an investment. At other times, they may need to step directly into an operating business, acquisition or special project, strengthen reporting and controls, and later transition back to an oversight role.

Key ResponsibilitiesMulti-Entity Financial Oversight

Oversee accounting and financial reporting across corporations, partnerships, holding companies, real estate entities and operating businesses.
Maintain visibility into ownership, capitalization, intercompany relationships and financial position.
Prepare and review monthly and quarterly reporting, financial statements, cash flows, reconciliations and supporting schedules.
Ensure shareholder advances, intercompany balances, loans, distributions and investment instruments are accurately recorded and reconciled.
Maintain consolidated and investment-level reporting across the portfolio.

Financial Controls & Governance

Establish and maintain strong internal controls across all family-office entities.
Implement approval processes for payments, wires, investments, capital expenditures and other significant transactions.
Maintain disciplined controls over bank accounts, credit cards, reimbursements and cash movements.
Standardize accounting policies, close processes, reporting templates and supporting documentation.
Identify process weaknesses and implement practical solutions.

Real Estate & Portfolio Companies

Oversee financial reporting for the real estate portfolio, including property-level results, operating expenses, capital projects, debt, lender reporting, cash flow and performance against budgets and underwriting.

Maintain financial oversight of operating businesses in which Axes Capital has an ownership interest.

Where required, step directly into a portfolio company to assess its finance function, strengthen reporting and controls, support budgeting and cash-flow management, and establish appropriate financial discipline.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Management Reporting

Prepare consolidated family-office reporting.
Develop monthly and quarterly reporting covering cash, investments, debt, liquidity, portfolio performance, capital commitments, distributions and key risks.
Coordinate budgets, forecasts and cash-flow planning.
Track performance against budgets, forecasts and investment assumptions.
Clearly communicate material variances and financial issues to the principals.

Investment, M&A & Structuring Support

Support Axes Capital in evaluating and executing acquisitions and other investments, including:

reviewing financial statements, working capital, debt and contingent liabilities;
analyzing normalized EBITDA and acquisition models;
supporting financial due diligence;
reviewing purchase-price calculations, closing statements and opening balance sheets;
coordinating with accountants, tax advisors, legal counsel, lenders and other advisors;
assisting with financing arrangements and post-closing integration; and
supporting investment structuring involving corporations, holding companies, partnerships, acquisition vehicles, shareholder loans, preferred shares and other investment instruments.

The Controller is not expected to replace legal or tax advisors, but should have sufficient technical knowledge and commercial judgment to identify issues and coordinate effectively with them.

Corporate Administration, Tax & Treasury

Maintain clear records of legal entities, ownership, investments, capital contributions, shareholder and intercompany loans, distributions and partnership interests.
Coordinate annual financial statements, tax returns, GST/QST reporting and other compliance matters with external accountants and tax advisors.
Manage year-end working papers and audit or review requirements.
Monitor cash, liquidity, debt service, capital requirements, contributions and distributions across the family office.
Maintain strict controls over cash transfers and payment authorization.

Systems & Process Improvement

Assess accounting systems, spreadsheets and reporting processes and implement simple, scalable and well-controlled improvements.

Use technology and automation where it improves accuracy, visibility and efficiency.

Working Environment

Axes Capital is entrepreneurial, transaction-oriented and fast-moving.

The successful candidate must be comfortable creating structure where it does not already exist, while ensuring the finance function operates with strong controls, organization and discipline.

This role is best suited to someone who can move comfortably between detailed accounting work, portfolio oversight and transaction-related financial analysis.

Qualifications & Experience

CPA designation required; CMA background strongly preferred.
Approximately 8–15+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
Prior Controller, Director of Finance, VP Finance or comparable senior finance experience.
Strong technical accounting foundation and experience managing multiple legal entities.
Experience with family offices, private companies, private equity, investment companies or entrepreneurial owner-managed businesses is highly desirable.
Real estate accounting, M&A, due diligence, transaction structuring and post-acquisition integration experience are strong assets.
Strong understanding of corporate structures, partnerships, shareholder loans and intercompany transactions.
Strong financial modelling, budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, Excel and financial systems skills.
Working knowledge of Canadian corporate tax and sales-tax concepts.
Bilingualism in French and English strongly preferred.
Based in Montréal and able to work regularly from the family office.

Compensation & Benefits

Axes Capital is targeting a base salary of approximately CAD $175,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The compensation package is expected to include:

annual performance-based bonus;
health and benefits coverage; and
three weeks of paid vacation per year.

What Success Looks Like

Within the first year:

material entities have accurate and timely financial reporting;
cash, debt, investments and intercompany balances are clearly understood;
the family office has a consolidated view of liquidity and financial position;
payments and cash movements are tightly controlled;
portfolio companies and real estate investments report consistently;
year-end accounting and tax processes are organized;
new acquisitions are integrated quickly; and
the principals receive reliable financial information for investment and capital-allocation decisions.
