About Us

At Baffinland, we work and live beyond the Arctic Circle, mining iron ore at our Mary River Property, located in the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut on Baffin Island; one of the world’s most captivating and seldom seen destinations. Reporting to the Manager of Mine Operations, the Mine Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient and cost effective operations of all mining activities, including development work, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, dewatering and project work; as well as detailed coordination with Mine Maintenance and Planning, Technical Services and all downstream Operations departments.

Main Accountabilities

Ensuring work procedures are followed and safety standards are adhered to (risk assessment, incident reporting & investigating, policy & procedures review, MOC, etc.).
Complete field audits, inspections and interactions daily to ensure adherence to policy’s, procedures and safe work practices are followed.
Investigate incidents and ensure corrective actions are executed to mitigate hazards working toward a goal of zero harm.
Mentor and provide performance feedback and development to team members and supervisors. Monitor crew balance and ensure training requirements are met.
Review payroll and flight planning to ensure accuracy.
Development, review of operational plans to ensure capability and delivery.
Work with technical teams to provide input to operational plans and designs. Review designs and processes and optimize to fit operational needs, communicate plans and review progress with supervisors.
Manage social problems as they occur and in consultation with Human Resources, administer feedback and progressive discipline as required.
Support the development of the annual budget and 5-year operating / capital plans. Develop capital justifications.
Monitor the operating and capital expenditures.
Participate to the Continuous Improvement process and implement initiatives to add value and increase the operations’ efficiency.
Supports asset integrity reviews and development of action plans to address operational and mechanical issues.
Support development of the department's annual execution plan with area specific goals and objectives.
Provide input and work collaboratively with peers and other departments to achieve safety, production and cost targets.

Main Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering is considered an asset
Professional Shift Boss Ticket in Nunavut
five (5) years of experience in a supervisory or equivalent role
ten (10) years of open pit mining experience
Two (2) years of experience directly related to open pit drill and blast activity’s
Experience operating equipment or deep understanding of mobile equipment fundamentals
Ability to work in extreme low temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius
Ability to sustain work days of 13 hours for a three week period

Compensation

Compensation for this position is aligned with Baffinland’s approved compensation framework and current market conditions. Final compensation will be determined based on:

Related training and experience
Internal equity considerations

This site-based role is eligible for participation in the travel benefits, site premiums, comprehensive health and dental coverage, and pension participation.
