Baker Tilly is a leading advisory and accounting firm dedicated to building better futures. With global reach and local roots, we combine the scale of a network with the trust of strong relationships. From audit and tax to consulting and specialist advisory services, we help clients navigate complexity and seize opportunity with clarity.
Your role:
- Prepare and review detailed SR&ED expenditure calculations for federal and applicable provincial claims.
- Analyze payroll, subcontractor, materials, overhead, and other expenditures for eligibility under the SR&ED program.
- Apply the prescribed proxy amount or traditional method, as appropriate, and document the methodology used.
- Complete and review the financial portions of SR&ED filings, including Form T661 and related schedules.
- Reconcile claim calculations to payroll records, general ledgers, financial statements, and corporate income tax returns.
- Work with clients to establish reasonable project allocation and time-tracking methodologies.
- Collaborate with technical SR&ED consultants to ensure the financial claim aligns with the eligible work described in the technical documentation.
- Identify opportunities to improve claim completeness while maintaining a practical, well-supported, and compliant approach.
- Manage multiple client engagements, timelines, information requests, and filing deliverables.
- Provide timely, high-quality client service throughout the engagement.
- Lead or support responses to CRA financial review questions and requests for information.
- Prepare organized supporting documentation packages and explain costing assumptions and allocation methodologies.
- Attend CRA meetings with clients and the SR&ED engagement team, as required.
- Assist with objections or other claim defence activities in collaboration with the firm’s tax professionals.
- Review the work of junior team members and provide practical coaching and feedback.
- Develop and improve costing templates, checklists, procedures, and quality-control practices.
- Monitor changes to SR&ED legislation, CRA policies, and relevant federal and provincial tax incentives.
- Support client presentations, proposals, referral relationships, and other business development activities.
- Build strong working relationships with internal tax teams, partners, and technical SR&ED professionals.
- Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, taxation, business administration, or a related field.
- CPA designation is preferred. A strong combination of relevant education and experience will also be considered.
- Five or more years of experience in SR&ED consulting, public accounting, taxation, corporate finance, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience preparing SR&ED cost calculations and supporting clients through CRA reviews.
- Strong knowledge of payroll allocations, project costing, financial statement analysis, and corporate tax concepts.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills. Experience with TaxPrep, CaseWare, or similar tax and accounting systems is an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound professional judgment, and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to manage several engagements and deadlines while maintaining consistent quality.
- Claims are accurate, reconciled, well-supported, and filed on time.
- Clients understand the financial requirements of the SR&ED program and are better prepared for future claims.
- Technical and financial workstreams are coordinated effectively.
- Junior staff receive clear direction and the practice continues to improve its tools and processes.
